I also think part of it was that every time he looked at Harry he was reminded that it was his fault that they were dead. Snape heard the prophecy that started it all, so he was directly responsible for the death of the love of his life.

Not only did Harry look like his dad, he had his mothers eyes.

Snape was an enjoyable character but blatantly a terrible person. Alan Rickman was literally perfect as Snape though other than being about 25 years older than the part, but that didn't really show until the last couple of movies.

I thought Snape acted like an asshole to Harry so no one would ever suspect that he helped the kid at all. If anyone was strong enough to read Snape's mind, all they would have seen was him being a jerk to Harry.

And as "creepy" as Snape still holding a torch for his dead crush was, she was basically one of the only people from his childhood who was kind enough to him to be remembered positively. That can be a pretty big deal for someone who grew up with loneliness issues and a lot of enemies...

After the revelation of Snape's past, it's not improbable that he was conflicted when dealing with Harry as a student. Harry's father being a bully towards Snape as a youth gave him reason to resent Harry's resemblance and connection. While Snape's fondness of Harry's mother gave him reason to look out for her final wish: protecting her child's life.

It's pretty clear Snape had mental issues. He grew up in an abusive household and then found out his crush and only friend is to live with his severe bullies. He needed therapy but the wizarding world was literally stuck in the Middle Ages.

I think it much more likely that he was more concerned with Harry's mind being read. If someone did that and saw a nice Snape through his eyes, that would be a bit damning. Snape was already fooling one of the best legilimens (Voldemort), so I doubt he was scared someone would crack his mind open.

idk why people, the author included, think Snape is anything other than a selfish asshole. He drove Lily away with his own racism, joined up a group of magic Nazis and while we don't know the details of what he did there, he was good enough at it to have Voldemort of all people like him enough to take requests on not killing someone, so he probably did a ton of awful shit. Then he is clear about the fact that he doesn't give a shit about James and baby Harry dying even though it would make the girl he "loves" miserable, he just wants her alive so he can delude himself into thinking he has a shot. Then he turns against Voldemort because he's mad Voldy killed his fantasy girl. He never really showed any concern for anything other than his own satisfaction and spite to those who got in the way of it.
