Republican Senate nominee Corey Stewart said that he doesnt believe that the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery, arguing that it was mostly about states rights.

But he said he doesnt associate slavery with the war.

I dont at all. If you look at the history, thats not what it meant at all, and I dont believe that the Civil War was ultimately fought over the issue of slavery, Stewart said.

...

We have to put ourselves in the shoes of the people who were fighting at that time and from their perspective, they saw it as a federal intrusion of the state, he said.

Stewart also said he doesnt support a Richmond elementary school named after a Confederate general deciding to rename it after former President Obama.

In political rhetoric, states rights are often invoked as dog whistle politics. Any conservative opposing something the national government wants to do will claim the mantle of states rights, despite the fact that the phrase was most famously used as a justification for slavery and Jim Crow laws.[1] Interestingly, most conservatives are willing to abandon any pretense when a state wishes to do something considered liberal, like grant same-sex marriage, or allow medicinal/recreational use of marijuana.

Except the south wanted the federal government to force northern states to return escaped slaves even though northern states had passed state law that said escaped slaves in their states were free men and women.

So the south didn't believe in state rights. They just wanted their slaves.

It's not exactly true, but it's also not as egregious of a statement like libs pretend it is every time the issue comes up. "Not ultimately fought over slavery" isn't saying that states didn't secede because of the immediate issue, but that wars happen for reasons that are more complex than that, which is completely valid and true.

Pretty much.

The war started as soon as Lincoln got elected. He didn't even do anything.

Why? Literally all Corey Stewart has to do is blast this clip all over the air in his campaign ads. Normal Americans (of any race) don't like racism.

The civil war was over more than "Just" slavery but to argue it wasn't about slavery at all is akin to this:

Republicans defend the Confederacy because they are pretty much like them: rich guys that rule a country made for themselves while using the poor population's stupidity, fears, bigotry, and patriotism to trick them into supporting the ruling class. Traditional slavery is a huge faux pas so they can't get away with that, but they'll make sure we are slaves financially to the system.
