Nope.

They may have had German descent generations ago, but some dude who grew up in the midwest and has never left his town really has no connection to Germany any more. It's like claiming that any dudebro with a last name that starts with O' ____ is Irish.

If you told a real German or Irish that some Americans that have never set foot in Ireland or Germany or spoken to a real German/Irish in their lives claim to be German/Italian based on the fact that their grand-grand parent was that they'd either laugh at the guy or get mad

the only reason I am american instead of scottish is that my ancestor's dad wanted him to be a priest, and he ran away from home to america so he wouldn't have to. but I still have scottish blood. and I can even trace my line to a clan.

Do you really think that the 5% or 10% (heck, make it 90% if you wish) of Scottish DNA you have makes you Scottish?

Somebody who grew up in Scotland was in touch with the culture, the music, the food, the slang, the accent, the traditions, etc etc. They were raised into the Scottish experience. You don't have any of that.

I'm not attacking you, I am just pointing out that one can't say that Jim Bob in the trailer park in Bubba Street in some rust belt or bible belt neighborhood has any remote idea of German culture, traditions or way of thinking simply because he shares a watered down version of German DNA.

DNA doesn't make for a culture. If you grab a German baby and raise it in Beijing, he won't inherit some sort of mystical link to his culture and start craving wheat beer, sausages, pretzels and start engineering BMWs.

When somebody said here "the Americans can learn X from the Germans", it is factually true (just like the Germans can learn Y from the Americans), the Americans "aren't German" (therefore, not needing to learn X or already knowing about X) because of genetics.

That's it! You're a connosieur of Scottish culture, case closed.

Seriously though, even if your relatives were closed off from the real world enough to avoid intermixing with anyone that didn't have 100% Scottish blood in them, how does this pure Scottish DNA transfer you what I call "the Scottish exprience" instantly? Again, I am talking about the music, accent, food, politics, going through their school system, interact with fellow (real) Scots, etc.

You have more in common with your American neighbors and classmates (*gasp* even many ones that aren't white) than with the average Scotsman

You know what intrigues me? (This is a secondary topic).

I find it odd how white Americans (I am one of those too, BTW) can claim to be any specific ethnicity they identify with and can trace some % of DNA to (e.g. Jim O'Connor can say he is Irish because his grand grand grand father was Irish and/or 23andMe told him he is 20% Irish) while other people can't. For example, a Colombian who's 50% Spaniard as per 23andMe, or who has a Spanish grand-grandfather could not get away with saying "I am Spanish".

who says they can't? if they have a Great Grandfather from Spain, they can call themselves Spanish. hell, they probably look it too. Spanish are white. there are different kinds of people in mexico and south america. they have words for them, but I don't know them. but it's like 3 people types.

What percentage of a specific ethnicity does it take for someone to be able to call themselves such? Say 23andme or ancestryDNA say somebody is 90% French, is that enough? What about 60%? 40%? 20%?

College is the only way to gain knowledge

Unless we're talking people like surgeons or high end sciences I'm going to have to disagree with that claim.
Some of the absolute dumbest people I have ever know in work and in life have been among the college educated crowd. They don't know shit. I mean they don't know jack squat shit about their jobs. They come in and you may as well grab someone off the street because they know nothing about the work or how to work well with coworkers. But the one thing they all excel at. They kiss ass like nobody's business. They all make themselves sound like god's gift to existence when it comes to talking up what they're capable of, what goals they have, how they plan on motivating people, changing things up, etc.
So imho that's the one and only thing college actually contributes to a person as a person. The ability to kiss ass and make themselves sound indispensable.

I and I imagine most Europeans find Americans really weird in this respect. It seems having an uncle who once went to a drop kick murphies concert is enough to make you Irish in America whereas my own mother is Irish and I don't consider myself to be likewise. It feels like Americans love to label their identity. I once met an American kid who told me he was half Jewish half catholic and half venetian.

Rightly or wrongly, if you have European blood and you go to said country claiming as such, don't expect to be treated like some long lost brother

It's very subjective. In my mind, you either need a grandparent from the place or be at least a quarter of it to say "I'm ____", otherwise it's stretching things a bit. Less than that, I'd just say "some ____ heritage". There can be a big difference between having ancestry and being something.
