I took in a kitten a month or so ago, barely beyond weening age. He's growing up well and is gaining weight, but he is extremely bitey. He tries to bite everything. You can't pick him up without him biting your hand. He climbs on top of me and starts biting my arm when I'm trying to sleep at night.

He tries to bite anything you put in front of him basically. Animate or inanimate. Will he grow out of this when he's older? Or is it something you have to break? I try to tell him to stop it but he doesn't listen.

I'm just worried he'll get big and end up biting people hard enough to hurt them. His name is Oliver by the way.

They grow out of it eventually but you'll need to start yelling at him and refusing to play with him when he bites too hard.

Carnivorans, that is, members of the broad evolutionary lineage that contains most carnivorous mammals, learn something as younglings called bite inhibition; they learn that if they bite too hard during play that their siblings won't play with them anymore and might yelp in pain. Humans have to teach them that when they have no siblings around by abruptly ending play time when they bite too hard

My gf's kitten was the same way at that age. We got her to stop by buying her little toys to play with, like a stuffed mouse or a little noise making one. We got ours a mouse and a hedgehog toy, she smacks them around the house attacking and biting them. One has catnip in it and is refillable. Seems to calm her down, keeps her occupied, and no more biting.

Yeah you have to disengage if he does it so as to not encourage it. Try redirecting the biting to toys.

It does that because it's not fully tame yet since it takes more time if their first human interaction is beyond weening age.

As said, the best thing you can do is to just stop playing with them for a little while. It doesn't even have to be for long. Cats understand this because the same scenario plays out when they're too rough with other cats.

It's totally normal for kittens to be mini murder machines, especially if they don't have other cats to play with. It will outgrow it. It will get big and/or fat and quickly enter the lazy phase of adult cathood.

Also when you play with it you should be using other objects. If you use your hand it will think of that as the main target for its murderous rage.
