Just rewatched GotG1 again for the first time in at least a few years, and I gotta say, GotG1 < GotG2.

I mean yeah GotG1 had more relevance to the MCU as a whole, considering it revolved around an infinity stone, but even GotG2 being so self-contained still kept it ahead in my book. Yondu was underutilized in 1, which they appropriately fixed in 2.

I mean yeah I can forgive GotG1 had to spend time with the whole "band of misfits uniting," introducing themselves to each other, and etc.

I previously liked 1. more than 2, but last night's rewatch has shifted my opinion.

I love, love, love both Guardians movies but yes. I agree that 2 is better than 1.

Deny, a lot of the jokes fell flat, characters regressed between movies, too many nonsensical event like Drax laughing off their crash which demolished the ship while he was being slammed off of every tree, and Gamora being able to hold him to begin with. It had several running jokes that just didn't pay off, like the unripe fruit and tazerface.

All in all, it felt like a big downgrade imo. I'm not saying it's not a fun movie, or not good, just that imo it almost feels like a half parody of the first. Almost none of the characters felt like they were the same guys we'd seen in the first movie. Aside from Yondu, they really hit the nail there, but the rest just kind of felt unremarkable.

1 focused more on action. 2 focused more on comedy. Especially with Drax.

Guardians 1 is an amazing movie with a great cast, stellar soundtrack, and a decent story with a villain whose concept was good but the execution was a little lacking.
Guardians 2 was a downgrade in every way. The characters are all Flanderized, acting like caricatures of themselves. Baby Groot exists only to sell toys. We get a B-plot with Yondu that's supposed to make us care about him for no reason except that they tell us we need to care.

It somehow made Justice League look good next to it, that's how bad it was.

I disagree. Both are excellent, but 'Brandy' and 'My Sweet Lord' trump any track in GotG 1. Hell, as soon as I heard 'Brandy' fade in the first time I watched it, I knew the movie wouldn't disappoint me.

Nope.

1 is superior. Way better soundtrack, and much funnier. 2 felt like they were trying too hard. The Tazerface joke was corny and baby Groot was annoying.

The only thing 2 has over 1 is the villain.

I don't think these movie are really separate from one another, the themes and developments of the second GotG primarily just builds on the groundwork of found family and community overcoming dysfunction laid by the first, to talk about the complicated family dynamics and overcoming the self-replicating cycle of childhood trauma and abuse.
