I've honestly never seen a more pretentious movie in my life. The disabled woman who is into literal bestiality, the black lady, and the gay man are all virtuous heroes, and the EVIL WHITE MAN is a murderous bigot. Yawn

Is anywhere else as bad as CE about the SJW paranoia bullshit? Like, do people in real life really go around complaining about the SJW bogeyman to justify hating pretty much everything under the sun? Isn't there a great irony that the people who argue that an action movie is just a movie with no deeper incentive to commit violence being the ones who are looking for secret SJW messages in every single piece of media they encounter?

It's sad that this new bogeyman has somehow become more commonly accepted than the bullshit nebulous, poorly defined, imaginary evils that preceded it like the Illuminati.

It's getting really weird.

Like even Star Wars has it now.

Apparently having main characters who aren't white dudes in their mid-20's is enough to be 'SJW'

I don't understand people who openly didn't watch temple of doom...

I got FUCKED in the head in that movie. I was too young pretty much and that one scene was just holy fuck like you do not let a kid at the young age I was at see something like that. More than nightmares. I drew disturbing pictures in class in elementary school after that scene for a few weeks following seeing that movie. Hit me hard, bro :/. Of course I watch it now and I'm all "ayyyyy how 'bout that DKC minecard scene lmao! :D" but that hit me hard as a kid and I was terrified for a while. Probably should have been PG13 tbh.. granted I hadn't seen the first Indiana Jones and the 3rd wasn't out yet, so my parents didn't really have anything to go on. Still, TOO MUCH. I appreciate the fuck out of it now though lol

It's actually the principle reason that the PG-13 category was created. It didn't exist before the movie. I believe that most places retroactively label it as PG-13 now, though.

Yeah man, according to Wikipedia;
The film was released to financial success, but initial reviews were mixed, which criticized its violence, later contributing to the creation of the PG-13 rating.

So yeah, you definitely were not alone in how you felt.

Sam Harris isn't the only person I listen to. I learned about him from Bill Maher's show when him and Maher were arguing with Ben Affleck about Islam. I kinda just talk shit about SJWs here because it's fun.

The movie was legitimately bad though. For example they straight up say the creature was from the Amazon rainforest which means it was either from a lake or a river, most likely the Amazon River. In either case it would not live in salt water, yet the scientist tells her it can only live in salt water and that she has to add salt to the water he's in.

Just stupid bs like this all throughout the movie. He leaves her apartment onto what's shown to be a busy street even at night and no one noticed a Merman walking around.

It's not that it's meant to be whimsical and fairy tale esque, that bothers me, it's that the villain is so utterly 1 dimensional, that I don't know how the actor managed to pull off any of the scenes he was in.

I've heard that actors have to have at least 4 levels of motivation for any given scene they are in to be able to act it out in a believable manner, but holy shit if this dude isn't the biggest stereotype of an evil white man written in a modern movie. He has at most 2 motivations in any given scene at best. And both of them are to be as awful as Guillermo Del Toro could think a white man in the time period could be expressed as.

I think its supposed to be ambiguous.

Anyways, the reason the heroes are all "oppressed" and the hero is a straight-faced white dude is because its a reflection of how monsters in these films are traditionally treated. Thats also the reason this takes place in the 60s, where those sort of societal predjudices were far more open and pronounced.

Also remember the gay man wasnt always a good guy. He constantly insisted against the monsters "humanity" and didnt come around until he learned he was being treated terribly, and probably always would be, and it put the monster's plight into perspective. Also, their Russian ally is white and has compassion for the monster, so its not a case of "all the minorities are so righteous against the evil white man"

Go back, watch the old Universal monster movies (definitely Creature from the Black Lagoon), then rewatch this one. >~>

But yeah, everything about Strickland was weird and uncomcortable. I don't know if it was intentional, but he could be another victim in all this.

Remember when hes getting chewed out by his superior. It sort of paints this picture of a once-good man who broke under the pressures of society. And thats another monster movie trope, most famous in Frankenstein (the novel. P sure he was innocent in the film lol). The monster is evil, but were warped into that state of mind by the world around them. It doesnt make them sympathetic, but does add a layer of tragedy.
