If Im physically sitting down in a restaurant and have been assigned a waiter or waitress, I usually tip 15%. If he or she went above and beyond to make my dining experience memorable or above-par, Ill trip more. On the same token, if she or he wasnt attentive and he restaurant wasnt noticeably busy and theres no visible excuse for the lack of service, the tip will be lower if any.

For good service I tip around 20%

If service was lacking Ill tip closer to 10%, although there have been a handful of times where a server was rude or overly neglectful that I have not tipped at all

Between 10-20% on average. I typically round up to an even number so might tip closer to 20%. I've been told in countries where tipping isn't the norm, some might refuse the tip. I can't recall if it was China but a friend said some workers might even feel offended if you tip them.

At least 20% for meals, more if I know you and usually I do.

Most of the places I go out know me and give me a 10-15% discount and I'll tip 25% on the pre-discount amount.

This.

I can't stand places with bad service or a bad restaurant that just adds 15-20% in your bill as a mandatory tip.

Funnily enough, I've been to a place before that added the mandatory % tip (when they didn't have this before), and the waiters and waitresses suddenly became extremely aggressive in trying to get you to buy expensive items and orders alcoholic drinks to bump up their own tip, and would give you the stink eye and ignore you if you didn't order much or expensively. I guess I wasn't the only one who noticed this because a while later they changed it back to letting the customer determine the tip.

I disagree with your philosophy overall but at the same time whenever a waiter complains about people not tipping the thought crosses my mind of, "well I've worked some pretty tough jobs and I didn't get tipped just because it wasn't expected in that industry." I, personally, almost always tip at least 25%. I've worked in the restaurant and bar industry and dealing with people like that (especially at bars) can be awful. The shit you will put up with working at a bar is unbelievable sometimes. Would not recommend making a career out of it

It really does and it's unfortunate that the US Gov't allows restaurants and bars to pay people less than $3/hr while expecting consumers to cover the rest while taxing their meal.

I know it's the cliche argument but definitely expect way higher food costs if tipping were done away with because the restaurant would have to pay servers and bartenders much higher than minimum wage to keep them from quitting. Servers and bartenders generally do what they do because it's one of the only ways you can make a grand a week or more without getting an education. Maybe implementing a no tip policy would be for the best in the long run but I just personally dont mind tipping

I mean, if you dont make a lot, but still want to treat yourself every once on a while, I guess it could suck to have to spend extra money to help pay for someone elses bills when youre still trying to pay for your own. Some people may not have a lot of extra money, but it would be nice if they could do something nice for themselves every so often... That being said, they could always just get take-out from the restaurant...

Idk if it would be that much higher. IIRC, the restaurant in California(the one that says tipping is NOT allowed) said the food prices are a little higher, but not outstandingly high. But I could be wrong.

Personally, I do tip. But I also wish we didnt have to.

They have money for the food. They just dont have the extra money to pay for someones bills just because the stupid rules say you can pay people less than minimum wage so someone else has to pay them...

Also, I think you tip them, too. So that doesnt work. Because you would still have to pay for the massage. And then tip them. So, taking away the tip from that still has you paying for the massage...

Pretty much every server I am friends with said they would be taking a drastic pay cut if tips were no longer a thing (even compensating for their wages going up by 300 - 400% to offset it). Plus as I have said numerous times, sit down restaurant culture is not as popular as it is in other countries, so making restaurants pay that much more money is going to kill the industry. Most restaurants die within a year, and the ones that don't usually aren't making enough money to make it viable for the owners to keep them open. Raising food prices to compensate is only going to make that worse.

Also, tips aren't tax free, they are taxed the same as wages. If you really hate the tip culture, then pay your bill with a credit card and tip with cash. That way the server doesn't need to declare the tip and it is more money in their pockets while fucking over their employer.

Thats how I always tip. Theres only the rare occasion that its on my card. But its usually cash. Thats what I meant by tax free. I meant they wouldnt have to declare it... Sorry for the confusion.
