My credit is still pretty average so I probably wouldn't qualify, but my wife has excellent credit and needs a new card. Figure we might as well have her apply for the best and work our way down.

That's got an annual fee, though, right?

Depends on what you spend your money on

Citi Double Cash (2% back on everything) I think is the best general use card

Thats tempting

Yeah its mostly gonna be a break glass in case of emergency card, but well keep it active, maybe put a bill on there, to build credit. We dont really need specific rewards like airfare.

As a serious response, Costco has a decent card through Citi if you're a member or looking to become one.

If you have Amazon Prime and shop on Amazon fairly frequently, the Prime credit card isn't terrible. 5% cashback on Amazon purchases, 2% on gas and... restaurants (or grocery stores? I don't even remember -_-) and 1% on everything else. Plus it's a Visa Signature card so it's got a few extra perks. Also the points never expire on Amazon.

Should I be looking at the cards I qualify for at my bank, or are those a bad option? (Seeing as this is kinda sliding into "Credit card general")

I just want something with no annual fee that I can use to build up some credit. I'd use it strictly for purchases I could use my debit on without consequence.

If you don't shop with Amazon, Chase (who manages the Amazon card) offers other good cashback cards without annual fees. One of them has 5% rewards that rotate per category every quarter. You have to "activate the bonus" but you can get an e-mail reminder to do that.

Bank provided cards aren't a bad idea, just make sure you read up on what it offers. I can't speak to all banks, but I use Navy Federal and have a card from them and it's right there on my account overview page with my checking and saving account and it makes it hella easy to pay for it.

It offers a very limited product catalogue, very limited travel bonuses, and cashback options (either straight cash back or gift cards to various stores and services).

Besides annual fees you'll want to see if rewards points expire, and if so, when - sometimes they expire within X amount of time after the last charge (so you can have "unlimited" points as long as you use the card on a periodic basis) or sometimes they expire X months after the qualifying charge lapses - IE, 18 months from a purchase date regardless if you make other purchases afterwards. To me that's important because I don't even really tap into my benefits that often and so I don't want to be using a product where the perks of using it are gonna just vanish into thin air.

Try just getting something from your bank.

The only way to build credit is to responsibly manage credit lines and loans.
Don't take interest rates into consideration - cards don't compound interest for a set amount of time after a charge (it varies by card so read the terms carefully), so as long as you're paying it off regularly you won't pay a cent more than what the purchase was for originally.

If you can't afford to pay the card off regularly then you shouldn't have the card and you should take some finance and budgeting classes.
