Ok so walking dead season 9 spoilers... Shane might be coming back in the next season so just got me thinking.

When they killed him off would his contract have been terminated?

If he comes back for a few episodes would it be for less money since hes not a major character anymore? Or does he just get paid the same amount as before?

Their original contract is probably fulfilled and they just draw up a new one.

Sometimes, they also have contracts that included a couple more episodes, so they do that. And sometimes, what happens after is included in. It depends on how they wrote the contract.

Pretty sure nothing needs to happen to the contract unless they were promised a certain number of episodes, etc, and this cuts it short. In theory, it's no different than not using the actor again so the contract would remain until it expires. Granted, some shows might also have a termination clause in there in case the character gets killed off.

I know from Harper's Island that the majority of the cast wasn't informed when they'd be dying ahead of time and were working on scripts episode to episode just to keep things quiet. The only two people who got told were a character who died in the first episode and another whose death represented a pivotal moment. Pretty good show, although I got to like the characters so the absurdly high body count started to get upsetting.
