Would be ideal but so far no one has managed to create a society where every citizen has a decent job.

If Reagan had followed up that statement by waving a magic wand that created jobs for everyone, then it wouldn't be a stupid thing to say.

isn't the goal of literally every single business or job provider basically to run as efficiently as possible with as few people as possible.

so with that concept in mind doesn't that imply that there will always be people who miss out or be unemoyed. why should companies add costs they don't need just to give someone a job unless it's for nepotism reasons

But what happens when AI takes all of our jobs? Technology will make most of us obsolete eventually.

Universal basic income will be the future.

They shouldn't.

Thats why this logic is flawed.

I remember when there was some big "anti 1%" rally near here and it was all these grungy unemployed people. A guy actually went to offer people jobs and had zero takers. Everybody just wanted to live in tents and smoke weed all day.

There's a point where it becomes absolutely inefficient to understaff your business. Morale is an integral part of leadership and working your workers to the bone shouldn't be a fucking business goal. Paid lunch used to be a standard thing.

Great idea, but not everyone is able to work. Not every job guarantees you can afford all your needs. Not every employer prioritizes his or her's workers needs over profit and growth (in fact, I'd wager that the majority don't, understandably).

Obviously, we don't live in a perfect world and not only do you have internal forces that may cause someone to lose their job (mental illness, poor health, financial problems, etc) but there are also outside forces that can (economy downturn, industry downturn, businesses close down). In the case of the latter, the government often has a hand in it, and the government also is often the authority directly responsible for it.

Also that workers have to grow and adapt to strive to continue to be useful to employers. All you hear is "some can't" which is a very fatalistic view of people's abilities to do better.

Man, I wish thatwasthen was still around so I could just tag him instead of really responding to that. Point though is that that was then and this is now and we were working to move past that since then, but yeah... for some reason we're regressing hardcore.
