I'm just confused what people actually want that only a full sequel up to their standards could give that Ultimate isn't

There's pretty much close to 0 chance of a story mode either way
They haven't talked about modes much yet to even say "There are no new modes"
They've already revealed some pretty decent gameplay changes

Like, is the standard for "Sequel" just how many new characters there are?

also I think you can probably expect half of the new characters to be Echoes and that's probably why they made special mention of them since they're easier to implement with a roster this large

We don't know the full package yet. But hell, I believe we have more playable characters than the E3 2014 Smash tournament had ready

It's one of the things I wanted

I also wanted potential modes, or surprises, or anything that made this seem like system-selling material.

But most of all I wanted more style and suspense. That's honestly one of the biggest draws of every pre-release for Smash games. I probably would've been happier with just cinematic trailers for Ridley & Daisy gameplay snippets of Inkling and like air dodges and stuff.

I believe it still is system selling material. When it was announced that a new smash game was coming everyone was basically saying good bye to all third party characters. Even just now TRE said I doubt we'll see Snake in another Smash brothers game. The fact that EVERYONE IS BACK. Feels absolutely huge!

The game is coming out in 6 months so the release cycle is much shorter than Smash 4's and especially Brawl's, so they're going to give you more up front.

I legitimately don't care whatsoever about modes. For me Smash is 95% about the roster and this is the best roster we could have gotten. I'm very happy.

When they reveal that literally every character is coming back, of course people are going to start wanting to know what some of the changes are, so it makes sense to focus on that.

When they reveal that literally every character is coming back, of course people are going to start wanting to know what some of the changes are, so it makes sense to focus on that.

Yeah, the in-depth view of all the changes is more to just showcase the fact that everyone of Smash history is in the game

It's a pretty damn huge selling point, ICs are the only non-Jigglypuff character my sister will ever play!

Also, it's pretty unfair to stick with the narrative of "Only 3 characters." The returning characters weren't just ported directly in. They still had to work on Snake and Wolf and Pichu and so on, and they weren't in the last installment, so it's a bit unfair to not count them, especially since you're basically trying to call this a port.

Most new Smash 5 characters will be DLC probably. Smash is now just a stage for advertising new games on Nintendo platforms. Smash 4 was a transition to this but it was still pretty limited. Now that Smash 5 has every character and every level, they can throw anything else in there that they want to sell, even just as an echo fighter or whatever.

You could even imagine when the next console comes out, they just port SSBU to it and keep up the regular DLCs and updates. They will have fully transitioned SSB to a game-as-a-service.

Waluigi seemed like the most obvious choice, weird that they're still so against it (especially with Daisy of all people getting in before him)

Waddle Dee
King Boo
2nd Sonic rep (Shadow or Eggman most likely)
2nd PunchOut rep (King Hippo?)
Another Pokemon (I'd really love to see Snorlax in there)

I'd be happy to see Smash Tour again if they tuned it up a bit (read: made the finals Stock instead of Time because it sucks to lose because did too well in the main game and ran out of people to fight)

heck I'd really like to see Smash Run (maybe with multiple maps, or more interaction in the dungeon part?) or SSE or Adventure again too

Not holding my breath on any of those, but honestly those modes might be the things I'd most want to see that aren't a given. I always like more characters but there aren't any specific ones I'm really attached to. (that aren't third party characters too obscure to be considered)
