I still don't understand what the difference is between this and a "full sequel"

we get tons more characters/content, plus major gameplay changes

it's not even like Smash 4 had a story mode itself, what are we missing out here?

It's 100% a full sequel. I don't know how anyone can honestly say otherwise if they watched the whole thing. But anyway, I am super fucking hype. It looks phenomenal.

I said it in one of the other topics, but this looks like as much of a "deluxe port" as a new iteration of BlazBlue. Mechanics are hugely important in these kinds of games and this one looks like it's changing quite a bit.

Directional Air Dodge is legit a bigger deal to me than anything Smash 4 did from Brawl

Not seeing what makes this worth another $60 purchase if I've already bought Smash 4 and the DLC. No new modes, a select few new stages/characters (most of which were just brought back from Melee/Brawl) and slight gameplay tweaks?

They're basically just charging full price for what comes down to a big patch and a nice DLC pack

You underestimate how cool I think it is that it has EVERY character. Maybe I'm the one that's naive I guess but I dunno, I've been wanting Wolf again for awhile so this is really nice.

Before there was ANY Smash Bros. announcement, people just thought the Switch Smash Bros, would just be a Smash 4 port, much like a lot of Wii U to Switch ports, with maybe a few additions.

People really weren't exactly expecting EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. in the game. There's a lot more stuff being added in and changed than just a Smash 4 port.

Definitely haven't heard anything. That's a bad assumption. We still have 6 months until release. They'll probably gradually drop new info like new modes and such later.

I mean, bringing back Ice Climbers and Snake is awesome because they were actually unique, interesting characters. But the only others not included in 4 were Wolf, Pichu and Young Link (the latter 2 of which do nothing for the game). Wolf is fine, but it's not impressive that they brought back a character that was a clone to begin with.

Smash 4 revealed at E3 with only Villager & Mega Man and from the start said "don't expect many new characters because we have so much now!"

Smash Ultimate revealed at E3 with only Inkling (already revealed), Daisy, & Ridley and from the start said "don't expect many new characters because we have so much now!"

I could dream of Break the Targets and Board the Platforms but we haven't had those since breaking the 26 character mark, I've long accepted more characters over that and that's the only thing I could want really. Adventure Mode could be cool but I despise SSE.

Most everyone in my IRL crew plays Smash in a competitive style (some at a competitive level, even) so the promise of big mechanics changes is enough to get all of us totally on board already. It may not seem like a big deal to you but that's the precise reason such a huge portion of that community still plays Melee.

If this game can close the mechanical gap between Melee and all the games that followed while also being the absolute definitive Smash game from a content perspective, it'll be a bloody enormous deal.

I sorta agree with Johnbobb only I was never a huge Smash fan to begin with. Everybody being back isnt something Im fond of only because I dont like a lot of the characters in. Knowing annoying Duck Hunt Dog is back is probably the worst though. Couldnt stand ever fighting that piece of shit in Smash 4. I definitely wouldve been interested to see more new characters instead and sadly the 3 they did show were really bad. Well I guess 2 of them anyways. I cant really judge Ridley since Ive never played the Metroid series. I never played Splatoon either, but I just hate the character designs in that

I would love some awesome single player campaign, but ultimately I play it competitively so characters and new core mechanics is all I really care about.

Actually I could use some more details on a more robust online. Smash 4 was functional but barebones in that regard.

If I'm doing my math right, base Smash 4 gained 18 characters not in Brawl but lost 5 from Brawl to end up at +12

so far this game is adding 7 characters that never made it to Smash 4 and 3 new ones so it's at +10 over Smash 4 with all of its DLC and that number should still grow a bit, probably to around ~+15. Seems good to me.

granted a couple of those characters they're bringing back are Pichu and Young Link and also one they're adding is Daisy, but part of Smash 4's 18 is Lucina and Dark Pit so it like cancels out?

Ridley is evidence the Sakurai's opinion can change. He specifically cited support for Ridley outside of Japan as a reason Ridley is in the game. The problem is I don't think the fan demand is there. While the cutscenes were cool, the gameplay in SSE was not popular.

Smash 5 teased a new Smash title without saying anything about it about 8 months before release, and then about 6 months before release says "Ok, here's pretty much everything you can expect."

There's no suspense here like there was for literally every previous Smash game. Just the way they talked about it was completely different from every past Smash.

This is like Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix when I was hoping it was Kingdom Hearts 3, for lack of a better comparison. It's fine, I guess, but not what I wanted and definitely not a reason to buy a full new system.

How about buying it because nobody is gonna be playing Smash U/3DS when this one comes out? I mean thats at least a reason to consider picking it up.

I'm having a hard time thinking of why people would be mad? What is a full-fledged sequel even going to give you? More characters because this is doing that? More functionality (Like mid air dodge and echo fighters) because this is doing that? A fun way of earning characters (this is probably the most subjective) but this is doing that?

If they continue to make the online work well and add something similar to SSE for the weird people that like that then this really would be perfect. I mean basically it has everything short of the N64 rom built in for the super nostalgic folks. This is basically what I need to say okay, I'll drop my Wii u and DS version.

Like everything else we get feels like it would be bonus.

I don't think they've said that though. There's definitely going to be some sort of single player content and they haven't shown anything at all about it yet. That's probably just being saved for another direct.
