Prizes also massively increased. No other game accomplished that. Maybe starcraft in Korea, didn't really follow it that much at the time. If it wasn't for CS, Valve certainly wouldn't have made Steam just for HL 1 and 2. We're looking at a completely different PC gaming history then. Would someone else created a platform? Probably.
