I don't really care that much either way. If anything, I prefer first-person when done right (and I believe CDPR will accomplish that) . There are limitations (same with third-person), but a skilled dev can make them more or less irrelevant. First-person is great when it comes to "muh immersion", which is especially important in a Cyberpunk RPG.

Gameplay-wise, I imagine melee combat isn't a massive focus, regardless of the perspective. It'll probably be a bit of a one-sided thing like in Deus Ex (i.e. something you do to enemies). For mostly everything else (gunplay, using gadgets, interacting with technology, even platforming), first-person is fine. The obvious exceptions are driving (which supposedly has a third-person option) and conversations (which will likely be in third-person, again, like Deus Ex).

As for seeing your character, I'm sure there will be opportunities to do that, like conversations. I get the feeling CDPR will take that into account and will have something up their sleeve. After all, style/fashion are pretty big in the Cyberpunk 2020 universe.

I was really triggered that literally no one asked the logical follow-up question about whether or not there'd be a third person toggle at least... I mean come on guys.

That being said, so far reaction on twitter and such to the first person news is almost universally negative and CDPR does listen so we'll see.

If worse comes to worse (for PC) there'll be a mod to fix it hopefully.

Unless they use a camera set within a fully modelled body you're pissing in the wind if you think a mod will create a third person view.

I thought that was assumed? Clearly it would rest on how much is actually there. We already know the full models of everything will be considering their "defense" is that you will see your character a lot and that it will be EXTREMELY customizable.

The real test on whether or not it will be possible is if animations are not just two hands.

We got a chance to sit down with Peter Gelencser, the lead level designer on Cyberpunk 2077, and ask him his thoughts on the audience reaction. Gelencser explained,

"First and foremost, I really enjoy all the attention the subject is getting, because it's important. This has been an educated decision. The first-person point of view is there so you can see things happening up close, and so you can really interact with things in a visceral manner. with the game world." He continued. "It worked out well with our exploration of the genre."

He then went on to explain more of the philosophy of how you present perspective in games, saying,

"Third-person works well in games like the Witcher when you have a lot of motion and movement around you. But when all the things happen to you, from you, within you, first person point of view is the right decision to take, especially because of the augmentations."

The only time first person is the right way to go is when it's virtual reality. I hate that point of view. It just looks weird and gives me a headache when I play those kinds of games, which is why I don't play often.

I'd like a choice like Elder Scrolls has. Some people enjoy it and I have no problem with that. I don't like it. I like to be able to actually see my character.

You can't really just slap on a third person view for every game and expect it to work the same. Especially if this game has a lot of interiors and interacting with the environment.

This game doesn't seem anything like an Elder Scrolls game though. A game like Deus Ex would be wonky in third person and if this is like that it makes total sense. Elder Scrolls has some pretty shoddy animations in general also.

The reason for something like this is probably because they haven't actually animated the character you're playing as in a way that makes sense for third person. It's not really a simple thing for most games.

Look at how Crysis 2 does it for example and that game is of much smaller scale
