They have a very high suicide rate. Their preferred method is self vehicular rodentslaughter.

3/10. And, oddly enough, NPR had a rebroadcast of a segment on earlier where they were discussing the history of the "billy possum," a stuffed animal meant to replace the teddy bear fad

http://mentalfloss.com/article/51030/billy-possum-president-tafts-answer-teddy-bear

(And, of course, once upon a time possum meat was more socially acceptable. Now it's a Roadkill Cookbook cliche.)

Kinda curious where they're illegal, since I was under the impression that most states just require a handler's license. Tried to google it and found that Arizona has them illegal. However, if you moved to Missouri, you could apparently legally own one.

Granted, you *could* just illegally own one because most of the time nobody gives a fuck and they're easy to get.

Colloquially they're just called possums in a lot of areas.

California:

Opossums are not native to California. It is a violation of California state law for any wildlife to be kept as pets. Only authorized wildlife rehabilitators may keep injured or orphaned wildlife and then only for limited periods of time. California Fish & Wildlife Regulations prohibit the relocation of opossums and other wildlife without written permission of the Department. For further information on the legal status of opossums and other wildlife, contact your California Department of Fish & Wildlife Regional Office.

Oh, so a possum is different from an opossum and not a misspelling as I was incorrectly taught years ago.

Whoops, sorry. I quoted from your comment cause I can't see the comments of the person who did say it. Mixed up the order of usernames while trimming it down.

Whoever wrote that needs to go back and take an English class. I couldn't make it through the entire thing because I became so focused on all the errors.
