My current CPU is pretty old, an i7-2600k. Was pretty good at the time, still good for me now.

So: I was casually browsing upgrades (cuz bored) and noticed the two next immediate logical increments are the i3-8350K and the i5-8300H and the i9-8950HK

:V

There's also the i7-7820X

letters, numbers, all different prices and performances with no naming scheme logic

Basically i9 > i7 > i5 > i3. As far as price it is the same, i9 will be most expensive and i3 least.

After that, the higher the number usually means newer revisions (and typically faster). The numbers help you determine what kind of mobo you need. The main thing to pay attention to is the GHz of the cpu (and the number of cores). Higher is better.

Ya, but why would they bother to make more powerful i3's while they have i9's on the roll?

Because some people don't want to pay for the i9 and would rather have an i3 that can get the job done.

Plus (and I don't know this for sure), I think the i9s are replacing the i7s. The i3s and i5s are still relavent because they are for people who don't necessarily need a gaming rig or something that powerful.

I also wish they'd pick up something less confusing. It's amazing how the mainstream actually picked up what an i7 4790k is supposed to mean.

Before I got into building PCs I thought people who knew these things were geniuses.
