TC, you should probably ask this question on r/PokemonGo on Reddit or contact Niantic's support for a better chance to figure it out. There might be a problem with your phone's GPS or cell signal. You may need to reinstall the app. Or you might just be unlucky enough to live in Middle Of Fucking Nowhere, Montana, where there's no spawns in your location because the amount of spawns are proportional to the amount of cell signal usage in the area. Either way, we can't really help you.

You can still get pokemon in the dead center of nowhere once you get incense. If you walk around, there will be a pokemon pretty much every minute.

Yeah, but you barely ever get those without buying them with coins. And you only get coins either from controlling gyms (good luck finding a decent amount of gyms when you're living in Middle Of Fucking Nowhere, Montana) or through spending real money. If you have to spend real money just to make Pokemon appear and make the game playable, you're better off uninstalling Go and playing an actual Pokemon game. It's an unfortunate truth for people living in really rural areas with not much around.
