A straight up magic high school bullshit thing.
I mean, it is a bullshit magic high school series, but when you get down to it, magic is just a tool the characters use sparingly. Its the main trios deductive reasoning that lets them figure out everything they need to. The actual magic is kinda a backseat to everything. More so in the earlier books. Magic and mystery aren't somehow exclusive. And a lot of fiction tends to have an element of mystery. In this case, it's a way to drive the story forward without just having battles or something.
