Pretty unfair comparison. Nicotine is fundamentally highly addictive. Not many smokers are doing it and aren't addicted. Whereas the average drinker isn't a crippling alcoholic.

If alcohol only needed you to drink a few times for 90%+ of people to become an alcoholic then it'd be a different story.

Addiction is mostly a genetic thing. Same thing can be said about people and opiates. Seems like a lot of people get their wisdom teeth out and get the good stuff, and most everyone doesn't go back to the pills

Genetics play a role, but it's not solely or mostly a genetic thing.

Also not everyone who "gets the good stuff" after getting their wisdom teeth removed actually use those pills.

Also second hand smoke has been proven to be just as harmful if not moreso than the primary smoke. So yeah it's pretty screwed up to smoke around kids.

People usually get addicted from opiates that aren't T-3. Usually, it's from an injury and they're on something for a month or two.

There's a difference between addiction/dependence and substance abuse, they look very similar when you're looking at it, but treatment tends have a different path and outcomes, with dependence being much easier to deal with

Addiction usually has two parts the help to bring on the disease, and its genetics and traumatic/substantial events that turn the switch on for addiction.

http://www.apa.org/monitor/2008/06/genes-addict.aspx

At least half of a person's susceptibility to drug addiction can be linked to genetic factors. ... When it comes to tobacco, genetics account for about 75 percent of a person's inclination to begin smoking, said University of Pennsylvania psychologist Caryn Lerman, PhD. Genes also account for 60 percent of the tendency to become addicted and 54 percent of one's ability to quit.

As for people who take the drugs, I dont really know the numbers on pills prescribed to pills taken, obviously not everyone takes it, but to what degree I got no clue. The numbers might be out there

I am curious how second hand smoke would be more dangerous than actually smoking. Does the smoke exhaled chemically change into something more potent? I can see children being susceptible and being hurt by it more than the smoker, just cause children are more vulnerable in general

To me, saying second hand smoke is more dangerous is saying the heat around a fire is more dangerous to a person than being in the fire. Both are bad though
