I am currently watching a scene where Cooper is telling bad jokes to his waitress while his boss scream-flirts at Shelly. This scene went on for at least five minutes. Why is this this?

Every character is just doing things. Ben went insane and thought he was a general in the Civil War for like five episodes which brought in Bobby, Donna, his brother, and the doctor into that asinine plotline only for him to "win" the war and now drag a bunch of other characters into this save-the-weasel plotline but he also used to bang Donna's mom and is probably her real dad and ugh

At least Josie and Eckhart are dead, so I don't have to deal with that plotline anymore. Maybe. She did get turned into a plate, so there's no telling.

And Windham is just boring. He's every serial killer cliche in the book without the personality to pull it off. Thankfully, I've only got four more episodes of S2 and I've heard good things about S3.

How is Twin Peak's second season this bad?

Network meddling forced them to resolve the Laura Palmer murder, Lynch wasn't as actively involved in the writing, but yelling Cole is one of my favorite characters. It's definitely a mixed bag toward the end though.

Because Audrey is Cooper's lady and everybody knows it, yet for some bullshit reason they introduced Heather Graham and Billy Zane to put a wall between them.

They've introduced so many random romance plotlines.

I don't think anyone absolutely loves every last bit in the Twin Peaks series. Some are better than others. It has a weird production history that tells a weird ass story. Even when you're a fan, like me, you have to recognize some flaws in it. And if you don't like the weirdness of S2, oh man, I don't think you'll like S3 at all.

I don't mind weirdness. I enjoyed the weirdness in season one. The issue is that season two isn't being weird, it's just being stupid. S1 had a modicum of restraint to it which gave the show a somewhat unsettling atmosphere because you were never quite sure if it was magic or mundane. The only thing season two's done akin to that is Garland Briggs' abduction by aliens and (in this last episode or two) Josie turning into a plate. Most of the plotlines are just outright goofy and they're tossed in and out with little regard. For instance, a good amount of time is spent on Dick and Andy acquiring a "little brother" to mentor, but I haven't seen hide nor hair of that plotline in several episodes.

This isn't an uncommon opinion lol. Hell, I read that the reason Dale Cooper isn't the main character in the movie is because Kyle MacLachlan thought S2 was garbage.

you're jumping on the bandwagon over 25 years later with negative preconceptions.

despite ups and downs in s2 it's not horrible by any means. except for the worst song of all time and a select few less than stellar episodes, but otherwise it keeps the quirky yet unsettling vibe throughout and is thoroughly awesome.

Nah. MacLachlan thought it was time to move on and he didn't want to be typecasted by playing goody two shoes any longer (The Hidden, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks). Lynch was bummed about it and had to change the script. It was supposed to pick up at the end of the show. With no Cooper, he decided to make it a prequel leading into the death of Laura Palmer. MacLachlan loved the script and wanted to be in it so Lynch had to figure out how to make Cooper appear in a story that takes place before he even gets to Twin Peaks.

It seems Wikipedia lied to me about that. Can't find any other references to MacLachlan turning it down because of S2's quality.

I still think season two is sort of garbage though. Maybe the last few episodes pick up, but there's just a lot of goofiness with no unifying theme.

This is true (I personally slightly prefer S2E07 & maybe some episodes from The Return, but w/e), but unfortunately it follows a dozen bad episodes in a row.

On that note, have you made it through yet, TC?

Oh, yes. The last episode was really good, though it did abruptly end a few terrible plotlines that I didn't give a shit about. I actually wouldn't have minded that being the series finale, but I tend to be fonder of open-ended endings than most people seem to be.

In that case, you'll be happy to know that the new series finale is more "open ended" than the original - like, to the point where the original finale feels fairly straightforward by comparison.

Only by accident, it was pretty bad. I think it was just overshadowed because not nearly as much time was spent on it; she was mostly a quick gag or in the same scenes as other people. She's probably the character with the most lost potential though. You could do a lot with a character who's suicidally depressed, bipolar, married to the love of her life, and distinctly aware that he doesn't love her anymore (and, perhaps, never did).

I honestly think there's a chunk of Twin Peaks that is there solely to troll the audience. Like that scene with Audrey in the bank in the season 2 finale. Some moments drag on for so long they become absurd.

Be sure to watch Fire Walk With Me if you haven't yet. Then watch The Return.

There absolutely are. Even before season 2 got bad, there was that forever scene where the hotel guy inexplicably doesn't respond to Cooper being shot.
