The last season at least had the first episode establish that Archer is in the hospital having a dream.
This latest season doesn't have a segway like that, it just gets right into it.

While I very much enjoy the series still, it does kind of irk me that this season and the last are entirely filler.

Yes, they seem to imply they're in this for a long hall, it just shows they've run out of ideas on where to talk the main show, I mean can you blame them? They went from spies, to drug runners to detectives while trying to keep some semblance of a main plot. Yet rather than go on hiatus to work out something for a finale they've decided to just do a bunch of random sequences in different eras of history while ripping off a few movies based upon that era instead.

the alternative seasons are a great change of pace. the ISIS stuff was getting pretty stale toward the end. I'd much rather have what we got than the show ending after they tried and failed to force two extra seasons of the same stuff.

That being said, if next year is last year, it needs to wrap up the S7 stories.
