Used to go to the Bruegger's Bagels like two minutes from work.

Well now they added an iPad-style card swiper thing with a tip prompt at the end. Yet another place where they're awkwardly standing at the register while I decide whether or not to increase their paycheck at the press of a button.

SMH I didn't call in, I didn't eat in, I came to you. No tipping should be yet again forced upon us since you've decided to weaponize our guilt.

They fucking know me too, so if I don't tip then they'll know.

Can't. Preset options of no tip, 15%, 20%, or 25% (which is also annoying because it's usually 10-15-20 at places like this). No option for "other."

Yeah but deserved or not, you still feel like a jackass knowing you're actively not raising their paychecks.

The other problem is I'm a regular. They know me. If I continually go there and not tip, they'll start recognizing me as the "non-tipper." Maybe spit in my food when I ain't looking.

Or they may not. But either way, I'd walk in and they'd get the "damn no tips from this guy" running through their head.

At the end of the day, their jobs have not changed, but they are now getting paid more by capitalizing on people's guilt.

Even though I know it's not a tipping situation (I'm not dining in, not getting it delivered, or anything that warrants a tip), I still feel guilty. It's not exactly easy to just "don't feel guilty when you know you're right" at a place where they all know you.

No good employee should get offended about someone not tipping for a carryout food order, at least not in most circumstances. If I go out of my way to do extra favors you ask for, sure, but if I make you a single $7 pizza, I'm sure as hell not expecting a $3 tip from that, and I'm appreciative as hell of customers who tip even 10% on carryouts.

What a stupid thing to care about.

Some lady wanted the corporate number because the mere option to tip on carryout offended her.

I don't care if you don't tip barring special circumstances.

Like if I gotta carryout 300$ of food to your car during a nasty snowstorm please fucking tip me because I just risked hurting myself on the ice to bring your food out to you and my feet are going to be numb for the next hour. Also I spent a shitload of time gathering various foodstuffs, utensils, napkins, a dozen types of condiments, and such together, making side salads, checking that all your bizzare requests were followed, cutting bread because the people who were supposed to do it never did, cut the kids fruit dishes into pieces they won't choke on and did various other little things to make sure your order was right often doing extra shit that technically is someone else's job there to get it out on time.

A lot more work goes into a large carryout even for those who aren't prepping the food itself than one would think.

But no I don't expect a tip for dropping some coleslaw in a container for you. Thanks for telling me you pretty much think my job is worthless by not only saying you are offended by the thought of tipping me but that you would actively fucking try to make it harder for me to get tips though.

Unbelievable.

Think of it this way; it's active vs. passive

Previously, when all there was was a tip jar, it wasn't a problem because I only pay with a card anyways. They don't outright ask you point blank "wanna add a tip to this card?" Therefore, I was passively not tipping.

Now, I have to actively press a button that says sorry, no tip for you.

Let's not forget by the way that I'm actually doing more work now, since I have to put the card chip in the reader, as opposed to previously, where I just hand them the card and they do the rest.

No.

It's psychological.

"Doing nothing" in the old system was no tip by default. Which was great. Now, I can no longer "do nothing" when the prompt comes up. Otherwise I'm staring down the cashier for the rest of my life. Therefore, I must actively decide to deprive this person of an extra dollar in his/her paycheck.

Get some cash then.

I moved a few years ago and my bank doesn't have ATMs up here, so I don't wanna pay a fee every time I need cash.

I don't do cash back from the grocery store or cash back places either because I pay with a credit card for them rewards points, and apparently cash back on a credit card is treated as a "cash advance," and those have some crazy high interest rates or something so I don't wanna bother with that.

Plus I don't wanna pay at the grocery store with a debit card because then RIP rewards points

Name one thing illegitimate about my case

answer my question

just saying that you now have to actively not tip vs passively not tipping doesn't explain anything about your discomfort or anger or whatever it is you're feeling that you need to go some where else

like I said, it is a single extra button press and you have indicated that is not the issue.

so what is it about the new situation that is the issue?

Don't worry TC, I know the exact feeling you're having. It drives me nuts to see the tip option on my receipts when I sign and I reluctantly tip anyway when I just want to pay the default pricing. That being said, I need my apple turnovers, and I need my salmon bagel sandwiches, so I can't let it sway me. I should walk with cash more often.

answer my question

While I don't have any sort of problem with social interactions / anxiety, the whole concept of being asked "will you give me more money for this service?" is a little awkward. I don't think that's preposterous.

It does explain my discomfort. You're the one trying to downplay it into "oh it's a simple button press." It's not. It's more than that and you know it.

The act of pressing one button is not the issue. The act of what's going on in the process of that button press is the issue.
