Personally, I feel anyone on the cheerleading squad needs to be able to pass a basic physical fitness test. Cheerleaders have to deal with very strenuous activity which frequently causes injuries. Letting those who aren't physically able to keep up would lead to people getting hurt.

Bit on the flipside...if theres a bunch of terrible cheerleaders on some pointless highschool team in some pointless school out there somewhere...big picture does it really matter that much?

Id argue even havong terrible football players on the team wouldnt matter much either. Theyre a high school...everything they do is irrelevant ultimately.

If it's not competitive cheer then I don't see a problem with this. Also if a team has enough cheerleaders trying out that there needs to be cuts made then that just means you put the worse girls on a B-squad and have them cover JV events. What a dumb thing for people to be upset about lol.

Definetly not irrelevant.

Thats serious careers for people.

Several players from my highschool basketball team were recruited after getting their degree, nine years down the road, at least one of them is still in a professional league.

That's about my thoughts on the matter. Non-competitive cheerleading isn't that athletically demanding, and excluding people is going to be more on the basis of cliquishness than anything else.

How likely is it that someone would use this to get in, get hurt and then sue the school on the grounds that they should have never been allowed into the squad?

Sadly, pretty likely. This is America, after all.

I don't see anyone suing the school because if the sport is sponsored by the school (which seems to be the case since the AD made the policy change in this specific instance) then all the athletes waived their right to sue when they signed up for the sport. Typically the school will still be at fault if the injury is caused by gross negligence of the staff in charge but any old injury that comes from regular participation in the sport isn't on the school.

That just means nobody will successfully sue the school. I can pretty much guarantee somebody's going to try.

Signing up for a sport means they enter a name and that's it. They don't actually sign legal documents.

my football coach would take in anyone who signed up for football until he ran out of jersey's to give out, then he had to start making cuts.

and I can see that being the case for any sporting team unless the students (or their parents) want to start paying for the uniforms themselves.

edit: my coach though would tell you on signing up though, that he didn't have to let you play, he'd let everyone get one play the whole season no matter how much they sucked, but after that you better show some skill if you wanted to get to play.

Yet none of these people think about what's going to happen when these kids grow up and have zero ability in dealing with rejection and failure. Way to set them up for a garbage young adult life.

I don't get the issue with participation trophies. It's not like the winners get the sand sized trophy. So what if some kids feel better with a small trophy, doesn't effect anyone else the slightest.

learning to accept failure is healthy for kids. i'm not going to go out of my way to protest or raise hell over participation trophies, but I do feel its a stupid notion.

But they are literally accepting failure trophies. I just see this as reminders to do better next time. But I agree no need to argue with that.

As for the topic

lol in the video there was a girl crying because she said that she worked so hard to get on the team and now her efforts are thrown out the window just because someone's feelings got hurt. Whatever happened to compassion for the other people who tried just as hard as she did but weren't selected? I fail to see how shutting some people out of cheerleading somehow validates her.

I think that even in an environment where everyone can be on the cheerleading team, differences in ability will shine through and the so-called "lower-performers" will feel the heat and adapt or just drop out of the team on their own.

If they tried just as hard they would have been selected in the first place.

??? A large amount of schools (probably almost all of them?) make you sign waivers so they don't get screwed when kids injure themselves and parents want to make some money through the courts. It's typically something that most kids don't even see though cause the parents are the one doing the paperwork for them if they're in high school.
