Like we want a woman to have that Jennifer Lawrence body but we also want a woman who's not a fussy eater and can put away a pizza and two beers on a tuesday night no sweat. We get annoyed when she has a salad instead of a main. We also get annoyed when she puts on 5lbs and her butt isn't so perky anymore.

Guys also know that you can't hoodwink your body into not processing the calories you're eating, but somehow don't make the connection with the behaviour above.

And I know you know a girl who every time you see her is putting away a pizza on a tuesday night. Her instagram is full of pics of junk food, and she's skinny as fuck. What you're not seeing is all the not-eating she does when no one else is around. Possibly the sticking fingers down her throat in the bathroom she's doing also.

I've dated two women with eating disorders and you'd never know they had one unless you spent all day with them for a solid month. The binging/purging cycles they do, so that it looks like they lead a "normal" fat-ass life when really they're spending all week feeling tired and cold because the only thing approaching a meal they had for the past 3 days was some figs.

You kind of need to accept that if you want a chill person then you need to be ok with her looking like a chill person.

Which is fine, so long as your expectations aren't that it's all effortless and you don't need to worry about it.

Okay spill, what personal event brought up this topic for you?

Some guys are superficial with expectations towards their girlfriends, just like a bunch of women are the same towards their boyfriends. Yeah, we know.

What recently happened to make this a fresh headline for you?
What was the trigger? Friend feeling depressed over relationship? Web article? You overheard someone criticize a chick with a muffin top?

Something stoked your fire.

An article I read that brought back a bunch of memories.

This isn't an attack on men vs women or anything. Just an observation on the unrealistic standards men seem to have.

Yeah and women have their own share of unrealistic standards for men too.

It would be a happy happy fun fun time world if a huge wad of idealism magically made all that go away for everyone. Too bad we're human and therefore naturally fallible in our priorities and interactions with each other no matter how refined we try to be. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Just try to improve life for yourself and those you actually care about. Because you can't save them all, Superman.

I know so many guys who have played an active role in pumping up their significant other, ordering the 3 pizza deal from dominoes and laying in bed with Netflix, taking them out to eat and ordering trash, on and on. Then one day they mention to me they are worried annoyed she's gaining weight...LOL.

Personally as a diet and fitness freak who weighs most of my food and has counted calories for greater then a decade my fiance is in the best shape of her life. She's a twin and when I met her at 22 7 years ago her and her twin looked the same with a nice figure. 7 years later because of living with me and sharing my lifestyle my fiance is in even better shape at 122 lbs and toned while her twin is 138 and plump. Went to the beach last summer and my fiance had instagram worth pics, her twin had cottage cheese thighs.

Take responsibility for the lifestyle your girlfriend/wife lives you can have a significant impact on it.

Yeah I get it. I've also had female friends who teetered too close to a degree of self torment in order to fit an ideal. I still occasionally try convincing some of them to not give in to pressure to "fix" their bodies, to fix what's not broke. Sometimes I've spoken up about the potential damage a person can do to their health in trying certain "fitness" fads (I am a registered nurse after all). I've uncomfortably watched peers put themselves through torture in hopes of saving a crumbling relationship with someone who's standards were ridiculous. And a couple times I've had to talk a friend out of getting ridiculous plastic surgery just to impress an attractive guy who wasn't even a casual acquaintance with them. I've had female coworkers sweat bullets when offered a small piece of cake or a breakroom donut. I'm fairly aware of what conflicting issues modern women can face in trying to meet silly social and media-imposed standards of health and beauty, partly because of the ones dumped on men as well. To a degree much of it is interconnected.

To young girls I have deep sympathies because they're still young and impressionable to media trends and pressure to conform to avoid humiliation. I don't hesitate to recommend to parents and peers that action needs to be taken to help a young troubled girl clearly in need when possible. A careful intervention can help them steer clear of an awkward phase of self destruction. Just as I would try to aid boys in avoiding that dangerous cycle, I do so also for girls.

For grown independent women, however, of age 21+ I typically just give them the usual suggestions most men are given when dealing with pressures to conform with unfair ideals: buck up and don't give into the pressure. Learn to ride or avoid the wave instead of getting crushed under it. You can't stop it. Adapt to it.

Not in those exact words, but that's the gist of my typical response when I hear their complaints. Why? Because it's realistic advice and they're adults. It's basically the most they're probably ever going to be able to do about the issues in their lifetimes. A cavalcade of feel-good PSAs aren't going to really fix any of that; it just makes society feel like it did something. And again, that dry "shut up and balls up" advice is generally the most support western society gives to men when faced with similar issues. Might not seem like it at first glance, but I prefer not to play favorites with gender politics. It's not a matter of "teh ebil patreearkee" that I mention both women AND men in these discussions; it's neutrality. It's why I inevitably tend to annoy the fuck out of people who veer far left or far right.

Darkman's probably the closest anyone's ever been to accurately getting my number here.

Good topic. A lot of my female friends put crazy amounts of pressure on themselves and their diets. It's not rare for many of them to feel really guilty just because they had a candy bar or fastfood.
It's very unnerving and frustrating how common it is for girls to be on some spectrum of eating disorderliness, and this is why fat shaming is really really damaging.

Meh, a lot of guys - whether they admit it or not - today are into girls with some curves. Talking 20-30 pounds beyond the magazine bodies. At least before they have kids etc, its really not that difficult for women to rock it. And after they have kids - well, yeah, they gotta put in the work to look like they did pre pregnancy.

I like fussy eaters so long as its not measuring meals in bites sort of fussy. Paying attention to your health and diet is part of being attractive and part of being an adult. I wouldnt begrudge a woman for being critical of my own habits, and she absolutely shouldnt date me if Im comparatively lazy to her.
