Is that its used by companies to avoid paying decent wages.

I absolutely believe there needs to be a safety net. However, companies that know their employees can get food stamps, housing etc. and it becomes basically part of the benefit package.

So my tax dollars are subsidizing corporations profits.

The problem is that I have no faith they would increase wages if these programs went away. Workers have no power in this country anymore.

Its a difficult issue.

I think everyone should be able to claim 5 years of welfare or take a smaller lump sum. After that, you can join the army or freeze under an overpass or something.

TANF, which is what most people mean by "welfare," is already limited to 5 years over the course of one's life.

Youre losing track of my point. Most people in these programs are working poor, working.

Also, child support is not a government program.

It is actually a fact, not an emotional tactic, that a large proportion of the US population (not just your friends Todd and Scotty) is in such a predicament. And it has gotten abundantly clear that there is a systemic problem here which includes individuals who are responsible and hard-working. Sorry that you're blind to that. Let us know when you're ready to stop being a temporarily embarrassed millionaire so you can help us fight for your rights as a worker.

So its a fact a large proportion of americans are forced to work for free?

If you think slavery must literally mean working for free, rather than working for (at best) subsistence, then that doesn't make my case "emotional," it just means you're relying on an archaic and overly literal interpretation to defend your view.

As a liberal I agree.

As a conservative I disagree. It costs more than it saves, and it's merely a bandaid on a gangrene wound.

Abolish child support and people will think twice about who they have kids with.

Abolish alimony (and no-fault divorce) and place more emphasis on marital contracts for dictating alimony and divorce terms on a case-by-base basis and enforce them accordingly.

Abolish welfare for individuals that are both able-minded and able-bodied - after eliminating red tape, cutting taxes, and reforming the monetary system so that people can do business easier, take home more money, and not be so concerned about it losing value over time.

Of course, if you do think slavery can only mean working for free, then it follows that you don't believe slave wages exist, in which case you've probably been irretrievably propagandized and emotionally manipulated yourself.

Its the only reason why you used it. You want people to connect slavery to minimum wage as if its comparable. Its not. And only people with no argument or substance uses emotion arguments like that.

Again no one is forcing any american to work anywhere. Sorry you used a shitty "analogy"

No, I used the term because wage slavery is an actual thing with an actual definition. Then you asked me if that means they're working for free, and of course they're not, or it wouldn't be wage slavery, would it?

No you used it to connect people making poor decisions to slavery.

Its like when people constantly compare people to Hitler. Theyre doing it cause they don't have an argument and want to manipulate your feelings.

Again no one is forcing any american to work anywhere ...so nope shit analogy

If they must receive welfare, give them enough to support just one person so they're forced to get a job, seek charity, get married, or to otherwise choose between prioritizing themselves or their child(ren).

So is it your contention that anyone not literally working for free can't be a slave? Just wanting to get clear on your view.

My contention is that your statement is 100% wrong and ignorant. And no matter how many times you move the goal posts it wont change it.

You said a "a large % of amercians are making slave wages" they are not. Not even close to being true. Get over it

It's really not. Let's run a thought experiment:

Remove every welfare program in the US. Now pretend like you are a low wage earner who was previously on welfare. You are now receiving less total money every month.

How does this make your employer give you more money? It doesn't. If anything, you are now even more desperate for every penny you make. You are now even less able to quit your job. You are now even more at the mercy of that low wage. What are you going to do, demand a raise or you quit? Then you will have no income and no welfare.

You say you need a raise to survive? Your employer can just fire you and hire someone else who knows how to "survive" on less.

So this really is all just a big misconception. You could eliminate every welfare program in the US and there's no reason why single employer would have to give a single employee a penny more, unless it's because they feel bad for them.
