i kept having it drilled into my head that avoiding a good signature is an easy ticket to prison....

I would not care because I know better. I know that you don't go to jail for crap handwriting, so I know she's just saying stuff because she thinks my handwriting is crap, and that I must improve it. But it's not like I'd want to hurt her over it, or anything. She just wants me to improve my real-life skills, for my own sake, hypothetically speaking.

We have a whole "po" for people with poor handwriting.
