right now? prolly half life 2 since the original cod 4 (unless your on PC) is riddled with hackers. and even on PC you'd be lucky to find some lobbies probably

I'm on PC. I really just want to give traditional shooters a chance. I know HL2 has more acclaim, but it's a valve game. Those are generally non traditional.

but that's excluding all the free mods people have made for HL2.

Eh maybe? It was really cool when it came out because of all the easter eggs and basically "where are they now" sort of stories for the characters. There were some really cool, memorable levels that you had to go through, and some basic physics puzzles (that were ReVoLuTiOnArY). You can also access the console really easily and screw around with physics (make people go flying when you kill them), reduce the gravity, slow down the time, etc., and you can bind all that to hotkeys if you want.

The CoD 4 campaign is probably half as long and twice as linear.

The AI in both games is terrible but it's more about the story in HL2 anyway.
