Just got hired as an editor for a magazine full-time. I thought I was applying to edit grammar and stuff in articles but I'm editing the formatting itself (like how it appears on a page with the layout of the text, pictures, etc)

... I have twelve pages due next week since deadlines are Wednesdays..

It's a big magazine and I don't wanna fuck it up but I only know words and not advertising

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is why you dont want to lie on your resume and know right off the bat what your job duties will entail.

OP, if you dont know what to do, I recommend talking to your manager. Worst they can do is fire you or assign you to another department.

Just roll with it and do your best. That already puts you ahead of the curve. Just think, they hired you. They are barely competent themselves.

Just take a likely nice paying relatively easy check. Save all the hard shit for min wage jobs.

The book you need is typography for dummies.... Usually an art student has had a class on it.

Their fault for hiring you if you fuck up

Try your best and do it to the best of your abilities. You learn by doing.

Trial by fire, bitch.

Not really. If the newbie doesnt know how to do his job and fucks up, costing the company money, theyre going to pin him as the scapegoat as fast as they can.

This is why I recommend, again, for OP to talk to his a manager and try to get a transfer or change in job duties. Better than going in with zero training and experience and ducking up.

I didn't say he wouldn't get fired if he screwed up. I just said that it would be their fault. It will cost them money and get them fired, but it's still their fault for their hiring process not weeding out someone who was unqualified. Right now he has a chance to prove himself and succeed in something he has no right to be involved it, and it may lead to a different career path in the future if he does well and likes what this is. Opportunity, Eminem, Mom's Spaghetti, etc

Good Luck. And just make it look pretty? As long as it looks good and works, should be fine.

Also, while he may have possibly lied on his resume, he may not have. Maybe they misunderstood something he put on his resume...

What magazine is it?

I got thrown into a journalist position a little less than a year ago and had to learn page design despite the fact that's not what I was hired for. InDesign is super easy to work with if that's what your publication uses. Throw questions my way if you need any help.

They must have had no other applicants. It seems they would have asked more questions about past experience and wanted to see something you've done even if it was college work. If you are still interested in the job you need to be studying up on it. You might already have some of the skills required for it.

Yeah, they moved me to a new position temporarily. I'm basically an intern/assistant and will get assigned more standard editing contracts as they come up. Still getting paid the same but have less work for the time being until a more permanent position in my are opens up

I donno, that's sound advice in theory but in reality I've missed out on plenty of jobs I'm qualified for because I was honest about my abilities and limitations. Meanwhile some jackass who's lying through their teeth walks in and talks themselves up to be the best of the best... so they get the job... only to be significantly worse than I would have been lol. But at that point most employers will keep them on and give them a chance, not immediately fire them and start the hiring process all over again.

Basically, lying (or omitting certain info) during a job interview is actually quite beneficial, at least in my experience. I don't feel good about it or comfortable with it, but I'm flaunting the shit out of myself the next opportunity I get, because I sick of being passed over for some idiot who's either a liar, or so incompetent they don't know their own skillset.

There's a lot of truth to the "fake it till you make it" motto.
