-Zoos are forced to slaughter animals to feed others in Venezuela, where bone-thin pumas have become the face of the crisis
-Emaciated animals at Venezuela's zoos reflect the country's economic collapse
-Rising numbers of desperate people are eating dogs, with prisoners eating rats
-Venezuela's economy has collapsed in recent months causing poverty to spiral
-Food shortages are growing amid a mass migration from the country

Please, before you slam the source being the Daily Mail, let me tell you that the Venezuelan humanatirarin crisis is extremely real and serious, there is an exodus of people from the country to other South American nations, Brazil alone gets about 1.000 new Venezuelan refugees daily. Many of these folks have degrees, but they prefer to live as beggars and sex workers in Brazil then to work their jobs in Venezuela. As a fellow Latino this makes me very sad.

The country HAS RAN OUT OF FOOD. Im not even talking about staple products like toilet paper and toothpaste, those have been gone from socialist Venezuela for awhile now, im talking about food.

Its odd because Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world, they should at least be able to maintain Qatari levels of living standards which aren't that great to begin with.

---

I mean, at least they're all equals under socialism, right, right???

It's not the fault of socialism that Venezuela is poor. It's the fault of low oil prices.

I mean to be fair, the country wasn't exactly a shining socialist utopia before, but these problems only really started to manifest within the last few years.

I'm not a socialist but to boil everything going on in Venezuela down to "hurr socialism bad" cause you want a talking point is rather dishonest

"Yesterday, one of Hillary Clinton's most prominent Super PACs attacked our campaign pretty viciously," read the fundraising email in Sanders' name. "They suggested I'd be friendly with Middle East terrorist organizations, and even tried to link me to a dead communist dictator."

apparently the 'sanders loves venezuela's system' lie also came in part from a clinton superPAC.

These days, the American dream is more apt to be realized in South America, in places such as Ecuador, Venezuela and Argentina, where incomes are actually more equal today than they are in the land of Horatio Alger. Who's the banana republic now?

that is in no way an endorsement of their socialist systems, especially in context of the quotes i linked to, where he explicitly states he's seeking the emulate the nordic democratic socialist model, not the south american model.

it is instead an indictment of the gini coefficient of the USA

i know you are super eager to find evidence for the narrative that was fed to you by a clinton superPAC but it's not going to help you prove something that sanders himself explicit said is not so

That might be a good response, if it was actually a true justification for the problem. In reality, the Venezuelan socialist government is turning away outside food and aid, because it refuses to admit that its socialist policies have failed:

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/venezuela/article199179509.html

And yet the socialist administration in Caracas wont acknowledge that it has a crisis on its hands, refusing offers of food and medicine from its neighbors and aid agencies, including the Catholic Church.

On Thursday, several dozens of people marched in Venezuelas capital demanding access to basic medicine and medical treatment, waving banners that read, We dont want to die.

Gaby Arellano, an opposition deputy in Venezuela, has been lobbying for humanitarian corridors that might allow the free flow of food and medicine from Colombia and Brazil.

She said Maduro and his allies are opposing the idea because they would have to acknowledge that their [socialist] political model has failed.

Theyd have to acknowledge that theyve stolen all of our resources, she added.

while the present venezuelan government obviously made a bad situation worse, this statement is fundamentally false; since the discovery of oil 70 years ago venezuela has always imported their food and their agricultural sector is the smallest in latin america.

lack of investment in that sector is a really old problem and the real question i have is why is their oil unable to buy food

joel claims it's because of an embargo/blockade but i can find no evidence of this
