The head on Guinness is perfect. It's dense and weighty and warm. The drink tastes like coffee, and chocolate. And Guinness ain't even the best stout.

I like dark heavy stuff, but that's not for everyone. Really the key is only drinking things you actually enjoy drinking.

I'd object that too, because there are so many types of alcohol and so many drinking experiences. Yes, maybe you don't chug alcoholic drinks like juice or something, but we don't do that with coffee or tea either. It's all very contextual. What kind of experience do you want? And what, if anything, are you eating with it?

A crisp pinot gris paired with something creamy or a little cheesy is the perfect combination. The acidity of the wine cuts through the salt of the meal to refresh you palette between bites. And the salt of the dish takes the understated sweetness of the wine and really makes it blossom.

Then there's the mouthfeel of a lot of these drinks. Beyond the sparkling or carbonated drinks, there's the thickness of the drink, or the way a swallow of good tequilla seems to vapor off the tongue like ether while a low heat kind of lingers in your diaphragm.

There are so many ways to enjoy what we eat or drink, to narrow it down exclusively to taste feels kind of like missing out. There are so many experiences out there in the world of alcohol beyond just drunkenness.

Heavy beers are great, just not with food. Theyre more for enjoying with a nice smoke in cool weather.

And IPAs are a mixed bag for me. Even understanding all the flavors that go into them, a good half just taste like dish soap to me. Dogfish Heads 90 minute is an exception, and sessions are all amazing in warm weather.

Same principles, just more nuance. A good bartender will be able to explain the flavors and the process to you, which will help you enjoy it more. I typically go for stiff drinks that accentuate the taste of the base spirit, though there are many cocktails that mask it altogether.

Purpose is simply being easier to drink. They arent filling and provide a nice warming sensation. Theyre acutely tailored experiences in a glass.
