Never got into one before, but I believe it's about time that changed!

I've played a trial on WoW once or twice. That's my only MMORPG experience.

I'm usually a guy who plays single player games. So I'm looking for an immersive experience that will make me feel like I'm sucked into a real, breathing world, but the people I'm interacting with will have real intelligence instead of artificial intelligence.

Ragnarok is probably the best place to start coming from single player games.

The Realm online is the best MMORPG and currently in Beta for its triumphant return in June

It'll be free so it's worth giving a chance

Soulworker is good, but more of an MMO-lite

I wonder why you're saying that. Does Ragnarok have a good story or something? Because TBH, I'm not necessarily in it for the story. Interactivity with players and environment is most important for me. Not that having a great story would be a deterrent, but I'd like a game that doesn't keep making me feel like I'm the chosen one, when every single other player in the game was also told they are the chosen one as well, you know what I mean? Kinda kills the immersion. While a good story and all that is cool, an interactivity-driven game is higher on my priority list.

Ragnarok's story is there if you want to explore it but you can easily go from level 1 to cap without knowing anything about the world.

Though that game is pretty much about grinding, don't think people like that sort of gameplay nowadays.

if you want interactivity though you might hate it.

Guild Wars 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, World of Warcraft are your go to titles based on your description.

They are very singleplayer friendky, offer vast worlds that'll easily suck you in, and if you want, have tons of lore and story to dive into.

Im more about gameplay than other people and whatnot, that said it's simple but deep, you can play most of it alone, and I liked the dungeon designs. I was unaware of the story.

Have you played FFXIV? If so, any reason you didn't include it on your list?

No I haven't played it, hence I didn't include it. I have no idea how it compares to the games I mentioned.

FFXIV is pretty good, it has a huge swath of content to go through before you can reach endgame though and not all of it is high quality (tons of fetch quests)

Ive played WoW, FFXIV, SWOTOR and a little bit of ESO. My favorites are WoW and FFXIV.

WoW is very casual friendly, which I completely admit to being. FFXIV has way better story imo.

Guild Wars 2 is fun, and a lot of character progression is tied more to exploration and public events on a map and completing challenges than traditional questing. No monthly subscription is required for the base game.

I love Elder Scrolls Online, especially with the expansion packs. You can buy it outright but the membership confers a ton of bonuses that are pretty valuable (like an unlimited space crafting bag) that are worth checking out if you get into it. Things they did well: Expansion content seamlessly blends into the game and there is a ton of it (from assassinating people for the Dark Brotherhood to stealing and pickpocketing for the Thieves Guild), the crafting system is basic but different from many other games, and they did a really awesome job with the world building. It's one of a few online games I've played where your actions actually change the appearance of the game world, and yeah it's scripted but it still feels pretty good. Their open-world auto-level-scaling system is also really, really well done. My only gripe is that combat with one class can become kind of routine and repetitive after a while - you can mix it up a little bit by respeccing at any time, though.

Wildstar Online is a fun f2p game with cartoony graphics and fun humor and fun world interactions that are dependent on your profession selection. The quests are kind of generic, BUT the combat system is a little faster than other MMOs where you just select a target and let the character auto-attack. Many of your abilities are area of effect (sort of like how the enemy usually attacks in these types of games), for both offensive, defensive and healing abilities, so there's a lot more moving around and covering specific areas to get the desired effect. ALSO there's this rather interesting player-owned home meta. Enemies drop house parts, accessories, decorations, etc., and building and customizing a home has become a very prominent part of the competitive scene (if you want to call it that), with annual events around holidays and stuff like that (like Halloween Home design competitions). Kind of funny imo.

FFXIV is a very, very repetitive game in my opinion. I've tried it twice and couldn't enjoy it just because the quests are so barebones and there's no illusion that you aren't doing anything except killing things and collecting things. I think it's a very beautiful game and very well designed, but it's hard to justify the price of an upfront purchase AND monthly sub when there are other games that offer an equally or more engaging experience for the initial cost of $0 (or at least a one time purchase).

Sorry for double post.

A lot of people will discredit this, but Runescape is actually a pretty strong choice, too imo. It's a very enduring MMO. It has a great blend of mostly-idle skills (woodcutting, fishing for instance) that you can work on if you want to chill and watch TV and play, and it has hands-on skills (combat, mining) for when you want to get more engaged in the game. The quests are all individually hand-crafted and sometimes have absurd solutions that are reminiscent of the days of 90s point-and-click adventure games. There's just a ton of content in the game... it's really not that bad.

A piece of advice that is valid regardless of what game you go into.... choose a high population server. On anything but a very high population server most MMORPGs are lifeless in the leveling areas because there are just not enough people spread across a very big world.
