The US state of Iowa has approved one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, banning most abortions once a foetal heartbeat is detected.

Republican lawmakers, who control both chambers, passed the bill in back-to-back votes, sending it to the governor's desk to sign into law.

If passed, the bill would ban most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

Critics argue the bill makes having an abortion illegal before most women even realise they are pregnant.

It's all a gambit to get Roe overturned while there's a conservative court.

It's one thing to be pushing the boundary and passing laws that are on the cusp of being unconstitutional. You have the mandate from your electorate, maybe they want such policies.

But spending time passing something in such clear violation of Roe v. Wade is just burning tax dollars.

Abortion laws have little to do with teens getting pregnant - just teens staying pregnant.

I'm not sure how states are able to pass these sort of laws when the US government literally decided that women have the right to get an abortion. Can someone actually explain that?

They stay in effect until the judiciary gets to review it in a court case.

Restrictions can be passed, so long as they don't cause an undue burden (which is its own can of worms as far as definitions go).

I don't think there's much ground for the court to back away from the precedent of bodily integrity that's been built up over the years. Likewise with fetal personhood with regards to due process. So it's less of a gambit in my eyes and closer to desperation.

I recall reading a story where some bigwig Republican congressman who pushed for stronger abortion restrictions was ousted for having an affair and forcing the woman to have an abortion. I can't even remember if the girl was legal or not. I wonder what's going on these lawmakers' closets.

i will only start taking pro-lifers seriously when they support strong social programs and safety nets for poor mothers.

caring about a fetus until it's born is ridiculous.

That's the sad thing. I'm no fan of the concept of abortion but you can't deny the amount of good it does for the well being of the population. If you want to ban abortions, you have to match the solution to the problems that abortion solves, else you're just causing more issues for your own selfish benefit.
