Surbaugh predicted that both boys and girls in Scouts BSA would refer to themselves simply as scouts, rather than adding boy or girl as a modifier.

The program for the older boys and girls will largely be divided along gender-lines, with single-sex units pursuing the same types of activities, earning the same array of merit badges and potentially having the same pathway to the coveted Eagle Scout award.

Surbaugh said that having separate units for boys and girls should alleviate concerns that girls joining the BSA for the first time might be at a disadvantage in seeking leadership opportunities.

Girl Scout leaders said they were blindsided by the move, and they are gearing up an aggressive campaign to recruit and retain girls as members.

I was a boy scout (made it to Eagle), and even back then people talked about how this was sort of inevitable. No one is 100% clear what they'll change the name to.

What if they don't have enough kids for separate troops? Like if there's only one girl who wants to join in a given area, is she gonna be kept out or put in a troop all by herself or what? Which troop do trans kids get put into? Just seems a lot more reasonable to have mixed troops. They'll get there eventually, no point fighting it.

I would too, but anecdotally, I knew a few mormons growing up that were required not only to be in scouts, but to get eagle too.

I don't disbelieve that they make their children do Scouts. My question is - is the Mormon population large enough that Mormon Scouts outweigh'

A quick Google search suggests somewhere around 7 million Mormons in the US... with 3.5 being male, and if we assume 13% are teenagers according to national statistics, that makes 455,000 Mormon scouts.

A quick Google search says that the BSA has 2.4 million participants. That means Mormons only account for 1/5 of the Scouting population.

Still a considerable amount, but nowhere near half.

If all of those left, and a balanced amount of girls joined, the BSA would jump from 2.4 million to about 4 million. Even losing the Mormons, this move should increase the size of the organization.

I do resume reviews and we get a lot of BYU applicants. Virtually every male BYU student is an eagle scout.

I have a friend who joined the Girl Scouts once. She thought it was lame and would have rather done camping stuff like the Boy Scouts.

As someone who was heavily involved in scouting as a teenager (eagle) I can say pretty safely that Mormons are not 50% of boy scouts. They probably are a plurality but maybe only 20%.

They are however far and away the largest financial backers of BSA which is why they have historically had such leverage over the organization's policies.

Edit: just searched, there are around 420k mormon youth in scouting in the USA. So that checks out.

I was like four years old but my dad told me he didn't want dudes touching me in the bathroom.

Only one kid from my cub scout troop went on to be an actual boy scout, and thinking back I wouldn't be surprised if he was mormon.

When he went to the intro meeting for boy scouts, the rest of us cared more about watching some other kid play Pokemon Red in the back of the auditorium. We collectively decided boy scouts sounded like too much work.

Our troop didn't like camping at all so we focused on earning badges. We had so many our sashes were full. There were girl scout camps too, so if a troop wanted to camp they could do it.

Unfortunately, this isnt normal for Girl Scouts anymore. The organization has overall become aimless. The BSA infrastructure is much better on a larger scale, and they have access to other opportunities such as Order of the Arrow. (Venture Crew too, but that was already open to girls.)
