This sounds an awful lot like people who say that citizens cannot overthrow their government, even though history proves that's not true.

Normal civilians like you and me are capable of learning to use weapons easily to get out point across. Black slaves were taught that being a slave to the White men was normal and great life. Come on dude we were all taught this in like middle school.

I think Kanye's thoughts were trying to parallel this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...

Why did it take 400 years for enough people to speak up? That's the question. People need to think more radically a lot quicker otherwise nothing else gets done and status quo remains. It's not just blacks. Whites could have spoken up and done something for 400 years and chose not to for the bulk of them, even anti-slavery advocates like John Adams.

I can give you a few reasons.

1.fear of death to women / wives and children.

2. Religion, believe it or not. There used to be a saying back in the day that the best way to subdue black people was to have a pastor preach to them. Indoctrinated black folk were more than likely to not fight back and simply wager their freedom on faith and the slave Master knew that.

3. Indoctrinated "house n's" or yard Boys... Convincing black people to turn on their brethren by appointing one or two of them as "leaders" in order to keep the rest in line was very helpful to the oppressive cause.

It took 400 years because the system in place was very effective, simply put.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_slave_trade

The Atlantic slave trade or transatlantic slave trade involved the transportation by slave traders of enslaved African people, mainly from Africa to the Americas, and then their sale there. The slave trade used mainly the triangular trade route and its Middle Passage, and existed from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The vast majority of those who were enslaved and transported in the transatlantic slave trade were Africans from central and western Africa, who had been sold by other West Africans to Western European slave traders (with a small number being captured directly by the slave traders in coastal raids), who brought them to the Americas.

Slavery was prevalent in many parts of Africa[15] for many centuries before the beginning of the Atlantic slave trade. There is evidence that enslaved people from some parts of Africa were exported to states in Africa, Europe, and Asia prior to the European colonization of the Americas.[16] The African slave trade provided a large number of slaves to Europeans and many more to Muslim countries.[17][18]

According to John K. Thornton, Europeans usually bought enslaved people who were captured in endemic warfare between African states.[21] Some Africans had made a business out of capturing Africans from neighboring ethnic groups or war captives and selling them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Africa

Slavery has historically been widespread in Africa, and still continues today in some countries.

Multiple forms of slavery and servitude have existed throughout Africa during its history and were shaped by indigenous practices of slavery as well as the Roman institution of slavery[citation needed] (and the later Christian views on slavery), the Islamic institutions of slavery via the Arab slave trade, and eventually the Atlantic slave trade.[1] Slavery was a part of the economic structure of African societies for many centuries, although the extent varied.[1] Ibn Battuta, who visited the ancient kingdom of Mali in the mid-14th century, recounts that the local inhabitants vied with each other in the number of slaves and servants they had, and was himself given a slave boy as a "hospitality gift."[4]

If every slave would have suddenly walked away from their masters to live their own free life, would that not have worked? Seems like there wouldn't have been enough manpower and resources to round them all up and force them back.

Of course, that ignores the problem with them being able to organize such a thing.

Kanye brought up choice. And maybe this isn't along the lines of what he meant but...

Africans chose to enslave their fellow Africans. Slavery was normal and part of their economic structure in Africa long before they started trading with foreign people.

I was taught in school that I should follow my country's laws and be an obedient citizen to my country....yet I would theoretically be perfectly capable of taking part in an overthrow of our government if a day came where it was necessary to do so....

How would they organize? Where would they go? Do you think no one tried?

Again, you're ignoring the substantial amount of whites who were against slavery at the time (believe me there was a LOT look it up) and did absolutely nothing. It's not just a black thing, whites were guilty of it too.

I'm not ignoring it - imo that much is implied.

I bring up history of slavery and the choices made that in part led to the Atlantic slave trade.

I find it straight-up bizarre how you guys are insisting the history of slavery is not related to slavery.

If it's irrelevant why is it bothering you so much?
