I haven't watched it seriously, but I've seen people say it's way better than typical shonen. I'm not saying it's bad, but from the little I've seen there a shit ton of generic demonish people and cat people and whatnot. That sort of stuff is typically in shitty anime.

Is it in line with garbage like Sword Art Online, stuff like Naruto or YuYu Hakusho, or significantly better?

I will say when it is firing on all cylinders, it is chalk full of drama, suspense, and good combat.

However, when people talk about how it is the best Shonen anime of all time, what they mean is that one arc is perhaps the best arc done in a Shonen. Cause I'm just gonna get people pissed off at me, but beyond the Chimera Ant Arc, nothing about HxH even comes close to something like FMA Brotherhood.

Its vastly better than sword art, Naruto and the like.

I like Naruto and dragon Ball well enough(I know both have an assload of problems but enjoy them despite or via stepping around the flaws via skipping filler and such) but Hunter X Hunter is genuinely good(but obviously not flawless)

I just finished it like a few weeks ago. It is my new fave anime.

The whole thing is excellent (aside from the last arc in the first half imo) but the 2nd half is unbelievably good.

The ending is bittersweet tho. It is both satisfying, yet also feels like it could just be the beginning. Still holding out hope for a continuation someday.

Also, make sure you watch the 2011 version.

The Chimera Ant Arc is probably my fave arc in anime. The last one and the Yorksnew stuff is amazing as well. You will get over it.

Every arc is fun and has a completely different tone, so you get all sorts of mixed opinions about what are the highs and lows when really it's a show that has something for everyone.

Like the second half of Chimera Ant Arc is the best shonen I've ever seen, maybe even best of anime in general, but then there are fans who didn't like any of what it was doing and prefer the other stuff.

First arc kinda sucks cause it's literally Gon leading the way with his pure hearted yet skilled bs.

Then you have a training arc which is okay. Then it takes off in an 80 degree angle.

Heard it was because it premiered on a children's time slot but was moved to a later time which gave them more freedom with the violence/ staying faithful to the manga.

And the series main strength is the character development imo.
