we teach regular history

its not the schools fault that the vast majority of people who actually matter are straight, largely because the vast majority of people in general are straight

Debateable!

I find history very fascinating and I think it helps provide valuable perspective.

But I probably wouldn't complain too much about any given school that decided to teach less history and more math or business or carpentry or some sort of skill that is actually practical.

I think it's fine to say that history is really more of a hobby than a needed skill, and therefore students who want to learn about it should do so on their own time.

yeah, this is what i'm getting at.

i'm not saying an LGBT history class would necessarily be super useful or interesting. but as someone who has always cared approximately 0% about history in general, when i see someone make a big deal about this i go "uh yeah, welcome to my feelings about every single history class i've had through the entirety of my school career." seems kind of homophobic to throw a hissy fit about this when you've never given a crap about how useless history classes in general are tbqh.

(and maybe i'm dumb, but i still don't get what the fuck this has to do with "the government being in bedrooms.")

I mean LGBT history is inherently, by default, less valuable than history in general, because it's very exclusively limited in scope and scale.

...why does that make it less valuable?

this is like saying "learning about weasels ripped my flesh is less valuable than learning about frank zappa's entire discography" to a person who doesn't give a crap about zappa.

if i don't care about history and don't plan to pursue a career in a field in which i need to have any historical knowledge, why would knowing about history in general be more valuable to me than knowing about LGBT history?

we teach regular history

I mean that's what it all comes down to right? Regular history has a ton of LGBT content, so that's not the problem.

Alan Turing went crazy because he was too smart so he killed himself. Socrates only hung out with his male colleagues and little boy students because he was too dedicated to philosophy and didn't have time for women. God created humans 6000 years ago and anytime a homo stuck a potato up his butt he summoned a tornado or something to destroy the town. Stuff like that is regularly taught and no one complains.

But maybe that history is actually a deeply limited, hyper-sensitive, censored form of history that actively hides the truth to ensure parents and the church don't get mad?

Maybe it is just the fact that very successful gay people have existed in the past, without destructive lightning bolts, that is pissing people in that tweet thread off. They don't want their kids to hear that you can be gay and also a productive member of society.

Is that regular history, or brainwashing?

But you just defined history's value as its ability to provide perspective, and LGBT history is definitely not limited in scope or scale of that -- particularly in comparison to plenty of other topics that are more or less mandatory.

Also what is "history in general"?

he's pretty obviously referring to just focusing on history as a whole, and if it just so happens to include LGBT people than ok cool. But don't specifically focus on LGBT people as the focus of a history lesson, because history shouldn't have a specific agenda outside of the value of the history itself. Likewise, a law shouldn't be passed saying "asian history" must be part of the curriculum. Asian history should be taught for the value of the history itself, not because it's Asian.

And really that's 100% correct. But fool's counterpoint is also valid. The problem is we already have a public school system with a top down approach enforcing what is and is not part of the curriculum, so who really gives a fuck if they now add LGBT history to it. If we actually had a free (not monetary) education system then yeah this law sucks. As is it's just another part of forced curriculum and not any worse than the rest of it so who cares about this specific incidence.

https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2018/05/04/605531828/what-the-kanye-controversy-can-teach-us-about-black-voters

Those black conservatives differ from mainstream conservatism because they aren't organized around white interests. Black conservatives get black people, whereas white conservatives who applaud Kanye for "escaping the Democrat plantation" are so removed from black folks that they think it makes sense to invoke the language of slavery to describe the overwhelming majority of black voters.

tldr white boys praising Kanye for wearing a red cap is the "saying the n word" of politics.

And also the bit about how black culture socially pressures black people to vote a certain way - that was the core of Chappelle's black vs white voting back in the day. And it's the core technique the alt right movement is using to gain an advantage over white people, who traditionally try to keep voting preferences to themselves.

So the implication is obvious - Kanye is clearly going against the grain, but the white boys are just going along with the same flow they criticize black Democrats for. They are on the plantation as well, and not as the slave masters they imagine.

The article failed to go into detail about real black conservatives (like Chance who they mentioned a bit and is def not going with the flow). But I guess they didn't want to call anyone out except Kanye.

https://www.vox.com/explainers/2018/4/28/17296052/tom-brokaw-linda-vester-matt-lauer-nbc

The first two might be legit, but come on...

A third woman, Mary Reinholz, on Tuesday published a piece in the Villager claiming that Brokaw made an unwanted advance toward her in the 1960s when she was a young reporter. Given the timeline, he would have been in his 20s. She wrote that he came to her rented home in the Los Angeles area 50 years ago to help her with a story she was working on and, while there, tried to embrace and kiss her. I pulled away, reminding him that he was married and a tryst was out of the question, she wrote. He acknowledged it would be unfair to his wife.

"In the 60s a guy tried to kiss me but I said no and then he stopped."

What a horrible rapist!
