Nintendo today detailed its plans for E3 2018, and among the most interesting details is that the new Super Smash Bros. title for Switch will be playable on the show floor. During show hours on June 12-14, you can visit Nintendo's booth at the Los Angeles Convention Center to be among the first in the world to play the highly anticipated fighting game.

As you'd expect, Smash Bros. for Switch is getting a "special spotlight" in a headlining role for the show. Nintendo said it will wait for a later date to showcase titles coming after 2018.

This seems like good evidence towards a theory I've had since they first announced it, that it would be more of a 4.5. If it were straight up a port of 4, I imagine they would've said so in the initial trailer. But for it to be playable so soon, given how much information we've gotten leading up to the game before, there's almost no way it's a full on 5 either.

So I'm guessing they took the Wii U/3DS one and are adding a ton of content, and redoing some things. A lot more than a port, but not starting from scratch either.

I'm gonna make a guess that the Inklings will be one of the new playable fighters they're showing off. Probably joined with another new fighter.

I wonder what the hype cycle will be. Weekly info with fighter reveals each month until release?

I mean, it'll probably have its own version of "Classic" mode and an adventure mode or something in place of Run and Tour. But everything else will be the same except for HD-ifying whatever 3DS stages make it in.

I agree with your theory that itll basically be Smash 4.5. A straight port would have been released much earlier, like MK8D was, and I agree that its unlikely that they would have a true Smash 5 already playable by E3 this year.

It's definitely Smash 5. If it's plays similarly to 4 that will just be because Sakurai is happy with the engine. Melee was too fast for casuals, Brawl was too floaty for everyone else, 4 is Goldilocks.

what i hate about the smash bros hype are the retro gaming nerds that demand to have obscure classic characters to be put into the game

we should have BOW Link, Odyssey Mario, splatoon dudes (all of which im sure we're getting)

Those games came out in 2014. Why exactly is it unlikely that a new SSB title would be playable in 2018?

Smash for 3DS/Wii U was in development for roughly 2 years and Melee didnt take too long either. I dunno why people think its too soon for a new Switch game.

I don't really think it's too soon, just that it's weird that so soon after the initial vague trailer, it's going to be playable at E3. Just seems like a weirdly large jump for something being made from scratch, at least to me.

Fuck that. With Sakurai in charge I ain't touching another one of his Smash titles. The devs of SSF2 do a far better job than he does. Even PM.

I thought it was said the new Smash Bros wasn't being made by Namco this time? If that's the case I doubt it's a port.

This confirms it is not "just" a port or else it would not take special prominence. There is, at the very least, gonna be major content additions, even if it uses the same engine as 4. It would be a total PR embarrassment if everyone chose Mario/Bayo/Fox/Pikachu and it just played with no difference from Wii U.

Also would confirm Gamecube controller compatibility, right? Unless goofy inputs can be done by Joy cons, that's possible too.

But anyway, we've known SSB would be at E3 for a while now. They announced a tourney for E3 several weeks ago. Also the fact that it's coming out this year means they really would have to show it at E3.

I am skeptical of it because I believe the English name is a translation of Japanese kana/kanji which of course have a very different grammar and phonetic structure. I find it hard to believe that such a relatively subtle pun survives trnalsation.

The Japanese versions still say "for 3DS/Wii U" you know. And the Japanese love their English. The only part of the game title actually in Japanese is the "Super".
