Spoilers to where I am.

So, I did the first part where Shephard gets a vision from the Beacon. Serah? Kills Nihilus?

Anyways. The game doesn't really explain much of anything.

First of all, I guess it is like a tactical 3rd person shooter I guess.

I see up arrow seems to tell my team to go to a spot. Left arrow tells them to follow me. One of down or right tells them to stay forget which. And the other who the hell knows.

Changing weapons apparently is holding in... Right bumper? Which took me forever to realize.

Hitting y accidentally uses ur medical stuff. Yeah I am about 4 deep on that alrdy. And the back button isn't meant like normal games, it is a grenade? Tossed a few of those out alrdy.

There seems to be no way to Sprint besides holding A during combat. Which is annoying.

It said I am supposed to tap A then Hold it to do some move but I have no idea what the move is or what the move is.

Decryption would have been nice to know before I failed 3 codes early on. Apparently it is quickly pressing the buttons on screen. I had to deconstruct like 18 weapons or so to end up unlocking them. Which hopefully I didn't need those later.

I had no idea how to switch armor or do upgrades. I think I finally just figured it out so now I have shields and apparently unlimited special ammo.

Some dude I just gave talent points to got mirked seconds later. Cool.

I have no idea how to spec ppl or what I should be doing. I just been putting shit into intimidate and charm cuz why not I guess.

I have a rifle sniper shotgun and pistol according to my menu but I think I can only use a pistol and a shotgun. Who knows.

I maxed the one support dude out in healing shit but I don't think he ever actually heals. He is a waste.

And after I found the dig site there was a white circle behind me on the hillside I just came from. After 15 minutes I decided it must be buffed because nothing was back there in that circle. Annoying.

So, I don't know what the hell is going on now, but it is going on. Also, I don't know if I am supposed to talk to ppl just for lore purposes or if it's not necessary. I talked to some people and others I was just like fuck investigating. I did pull guns on two people alrdy. They don't seem to like that shit too much.

You might know this but another thing to remember is to make sure to save very very VERY VERY often.

Oh god I made the mistake of not knowing I had to manually save or manually turn on auto save or... Something, forget which

And spent a shit load of time on this one stupid planet

Then ended up getting softlocked by getting the Mako stuck and being unable to exit it

And decided I wasn't going to do it all again so I never played Mass Effect again

Happened to me too until I learned to manual save. I think I saved after every combat encounter once I learned!

Doesn't it auto save? I swear it said saving don't turn off before I turned it off last. I have never manually saved yet.

Oh and I died twice so far.

Once cuz I was getting a chest near some fire and apparently the heat of this fire was immense cuz I died in seconds next to it.

And once cuz I was disarming this bomb and apparently my teammates don't do a great job with covering me cuz this dude just ran up and started capping me in the head over and over til I died.

*Shrug*

Autosaves are very rare, I think usually when landing on a planet and leaving it? Whatever the actual frequency is, make sure you manually save often.

Very often.

More often than that!

Mass Effect 1 does a great job introducing the world and species, and it has a pretty strong main plot. That said, it has a host of technical issues that made it intolerable for many people (horrible menu system, recycled interior areas, uninteresting side quests, weak leveling system, and the weakest dialogue/character development of the trilogy).

It's a short game, so even if you're not loving it, I recommend powering through so you can try 2, which fixes most of the original's issues. Also, importing a character between games is one of the funnest things about the trilogy.

Just one protip that I always leave in these topics: you get only half XP when killing enemies in the MAKO. To truly cheese the game, you can always whittle down an enemy's HP in the MAKO, then step out to land the killing blow on foot and gain full XP.
