if TC's income was average or less they'd have even waived the costs depending on the state he's in

Why are you attacking the OP in a bid to ignore the fact that the system is clearly messed up? The services he got simply should not cost that much overall and should not have cost him that much. There's proven better ways to do it, but you are focused on attacking the victim of a broken mess.

In any other circumstance you'd laugh at someone who is financially stable complaining about a cost. TC is not an example of the system being messed up. His costs are a very small percentage of his income and net worth.

How much should it have costed for immediate high-quality care?

His level of compensation even coming into the picture at this level is evidence of how broken the system is. It shouldn't be anywhere near a deductible. I wouldn't laugh nearly regardless of how much he made because he shouldn't be paying $1500 for that, period. His costs are the problem, both in terms of the fact that our prices are opaque and incredibly inflated, and the fact that he is expected to pay out of pocket for something we could cover with taxes like a rational 1st world country.

Covering it with taxes is still paying for it, except it's forced payment by the government. And we can see that costs of government-provided services end up being even more inflated. I don't like the idea of giving the government that much influence, especially not when 30% of America's yearly healthcare expenditures come from obesity and smoking. With the population getting fatter, it's a ticking time bomb to try to spend tax dollars on healthcare.

For his income and net worth, $1500 for an emergency is not expensive at all.

Says the guy who can't handle CE so he puts people on ignore. Go write it on your spreadsheets.

No kidding. He is bragging about free health care when he likely spent the entire day waiting to be seen. I go in somewhere and be seen instantly. Hes having a little meltdown here

honestly i'd wait a couple hours if it would save me from financial ruin. i bet if it was an actual emergency then it would be fast and still free

I thought when that happens, that price is for the insurance company and you are supposed to contact the hospital and they work it out so its cheaper for you since you dont have health insurance? Im not sure how it works since I have military health insurance.

I don't see the issue here if you're on a high deductible plan. Overall you have much lower premiums so if you don't go to the doctor often you'll still save more and get to contribute to an HSA.

Yeah, unless you earn like $1000 an hour, waiting a couple of hours for free is better.

Edit: Although if it's life or death, you always get seen straight away over here before anyone jumps on this.

the issue is that in most countries you wouldn't have to pay anything, including premiums of any amount

You pay it in deductions from your check going to the government and not an insurance company. For example, in Germany, your deduction for state run health insurance is 7.3% for all working parties. If I took the amount I pay for my health care coverage and converted it to a percentage of my wife and Is income, I come to a number of 2.2%. If our health care costs are less than $45000, our plan is cheaper than what Germany is doing. As long as we are not asking for coverage that is not available under our plan, we will usually come out ahead with the US system.

I just want to remind everyone that even with our objectively shitty healthcare system, wait times are not good. If you need to see a specialist (even in the biggest cities like New York), it's still a 4 month waiting period.

Yes I enjoy my similar wait periods without a dime out of my pocket

I've barely ever waited over 3 months for any specialist. Many I've seen quickly!

That sucks. I had the same from a trip to Mexico back in early February. Thankfully, I was able to get better with a trip to the walk in clinic for $85. Luckily, I didnt get convulsions. Glad you are better at least even if it means digging into your savings.
