You cannot dispute the NWD moderation though

This. NWDs can't, but a simple deletion can be. NWDs are mainly for flaming and extremely light trolling, a slap on the wrist to make sure people get the point before getting hit with heavier moderations.

I think because we went to an all or nothing system, with even the most mild insult being considered a flame (People griped for one about inconsistency with different flames, so I think this was the solution. Draw a hard line in the sand.), they did this to give a little extra padding before actual deletions and karma loss moderations. Would have been pretty absurd to call someone a nerd or troll and start losing karma almost right away.

Those were the best years.

From before 2001 until probably 2009ish, but could be earlier. I closed my original main in I believe 2012 and the mods and mod system had been garbage for a few years at that point. I have no idea when average Joe became a trolling term. I'm not really understanding what you mean by this post.
