Current Events > I got a lecture at work for something I said

I walk in the break room and the 4 people in there speaking before I walked in immediately turned around and stopped talking. I walk in and laugh saying its just me. Dont shoot. They continued talking.

Later on my manager calls me into his office and asks if I feel like Im fitting in. I started training into a new role (no pay difference) and if I was getting boxed out. I said no. Whats going on?

Basically he asks me was anyone talking bad about me in the break room. I didnt even know what he was talking about. I just said I ate my lunch and left nothing happened. Then he goes well joking about getting shot isnt the best thing now a days

Then it dawned on me why Im in his office. I kinda just say oh Ill watch what I say. Which is BS like Im basically getting a lecture about someone else getting offended by me making a joke on myself.

I mean I guess Im in the wrong but its like shit I dont need a damn lecture because I dont talk about people when they arent around enough to be scared to finish sentences when someone walks in the room

Yeah but the mature thing to do would be for them to address you directly about it instead of running up to the boss after the fact and then you don't even remember what you said because it was a more-or-less innocuous comment.

I guess you could "apologize" to your co-workers and just let them know in the future to let you know if you say something offensive (if you truly are approachable and aren't gonna snap at them or something).

Could be that some new coworkers is a thin-skinned wimp.

At my place it was 24/7 banter until this girl showed up and suddenly people froze the fuck up. Turns out she ratted someone out for saying one of the pieces of equipment was stupid - not a person, a piece of machinery. I didn't care personally - just avoid talking to her whenever possible - but yeah. That stuff can be touchy.

It sounds more like someone thought you were talking that way because you weren't fitting in and thought people didn't like you/were being aggressive towards you/etc. , and that it isn't something to just joke about if you think one of your coworkers might shoot you.

Yea I can see that since Im technically new and I keep to myself for the most part. Ive even had some coworkers say people always say youre quiet but youre so funny. I dunno Ill stick to the shitty dad jokes

Something like this I guess just give it the benefit of the doubt. For all we know, one of those folks had a family member who got shot or something. It seems stupid that somebody was upset enough about it that they escalated it, but whatever. As long as the boss doesn't legitimately think you are an ass.

You can legitimately get fired by companies for posting edgy/partying (even if 100% legal) pictures on Twitter or Facebook etc. if the company gets wind of it somehow and is displeased with how youre representing them on your off time. Thats been a thing for a while now too.
