I agree with most games on your list with the exception of RE4 (I think it deserves all the praise it got) and KOTOR (another classic).

Half Life 2 I go back and forth on, it had some classic moments but there were a few levels I also thought were kind of crappy (the boat one, the antlion one, etc)

Knights of the Old Republic 1
Morrowind
Diablo 2
Super Metroid
Symphony of the Night

SotN is one of the best "metroidvania" games ever made, and they did it first.

Diablo 2 made hack and slash loot rpg's popular and stands strong through the test of time.

Knights of the Old Republic -- you may be right on this one, I just love star wars and rpgs and this combined those things into something amazing

Super Metroid is just an amazing game from the golden era.

Morrowind was a massive sandbox with a spellcrafting system that allowed for nearly anything in that game. The massive world was completely handcrafted. Something that later elder scrolls game chose to ignore.

Mind you, all the games on your list were excellent games, but I could definitely see some of them as being overrated.

Surprised Ocarina of Time isn't on there.

It's genre-defining like RE4, but by now it's not as great as some games today. Still fun, but I prefer TP and Okami over it.

1. The game is fun but once you learn how to wall jump you can easily gain access to places you're not supposed to and get super missiles or power bombs and make the game a complete cake walk. That to me is a design flaw.

2. People think too highly of this game and that negates them from enjoying the other Metroid games especially Fusion.

i see what you mean but this is a very minor issue for me, and it's not like super metroid is that difficult of a game anyway

It's a comparison thing. When Fusion came out all the SM fans trashed it and could not find any enjoyment out of it. Fusion was also a great game but the fact that some people thought SM was too good that they couldn't see the good in Fusion or ZM.

Getting trashed on doesn't nullify the overratedness of it.

If 10 thousand people are haters and call it 5/10, but 100 thousand people overate it at 10/10, that still averages out to 9.5/10, which is overrated.

Your math is correct however it doesn't apply to Skyrim. Should have seen when it first came out, fans were shitting on it hard saying fast travel ruins the game, no medium armor, too catered to casuals, not enough freedom, not enough customization....

I did see it when it first came out. Morrowind and Oblivion fanboys were pissed they didn't like it as much as their previous ones. The game still won virtually every game of the year award. I'm sure the Skyrim board looked like a mix of haters and fans, but the vast, vast majority of the gaming population, more than 90%, heavily overrates the games. The haters are not significant enough to put a dent in that.

I like all the games on the list, it's just I also know it's not flawless.

I like a ton of SNES RPGs such as Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 1 and 2, Secret of Mana and Evermore.

My definition of overrated is something being super over praised without acknowledging it's flaws and there's not a fair balance of love/hate towards the product.

I love Diablo 2 and put in so many hours and grind to that game but the game is a train rekt. So many people hacked and botted the game, the rare drops were like 0.0000002% chance of dropping, it was just terrible and there was no way of fixing it and no one cared and still thought it was great as it is. It was a clusterfuck and was not as good as everyone thought it was when you take a breath and realize how toxic the game and what it did.

This one dude tried to tell me RE4 is so great that the way the guns are made and react is poetic like the dude went deep space 9 trying to describe how great RE4 was.

Super Metroid deserves all the praise it gets, even if you're right about it unfairly overshadowing the rest of the series (it's actually the only Metroid game I've played, admittedly...). It's a gorgeous, perfectly-paced game with tight controls & one of the best-executed "tutorial" sections in any video game to date.

Personally, if I were to pick a 4th gen or earlier game to put on this list (80's babies proceed with caution), it would probably be Final Fantasy VI or A Link to the Past.

See, I think you're looking at these games through a different lens.

For RE4, you're judging it by how the game is treated now, and for Skyrim you're basing this off what you saw when it came out. If you looked at the fanbase back in 2005, RE4 would be receiving far more hate than praise. But the game got a lot of new players into the series, so if you look at the game now (which you're doing) it's seen as the golden standard. The fanbase has grown and changed over the decade.

The same is true for Skyrim. Back in 2011, the early adopters were Elder Scrolls fans, and you saw a lot of hate. But as Skyrim made a name for itself, the game soared in popularity thanks to newcomers, drowning out the old haters even stronger than RE4 fans drowned out their old haters. You're getting hung up on your first impression without looking objectively at the fanbase today. It's also possible you're viewing the "skyrim should stop getting remade" people as "skyrim is bad" people, which is wrong.

I just think that to be objective, you need to judge the games by the same standard, which you are not doing. Either judge both of them at the time of release, or both of them at the present. Because you're being inconsistent.

RE4 is overrated because this game gets way too many praise without acknowledging its flaws. Skyrim is not overrated because everyone praises and also shits on it. There's equal love and hate for Skyrim. There isn't equal love and hate for RE4.
