It has nothing to do with being SJW. Some things stop being okay as awareness gets more mainstream. A few years ago you might have thought that the "Indians" in the Peter Pan movie are okay. Right now we view circumcision as something that is okay , but in a few decades in the future it will be widely accepted as a barbaric practice.

Adam vs. Eve is one of the worst imo. Horrible beat, very few references, bad rhymes, boring visuals, just abysmal all around. Thomas Jefferson vs. Frederick Douglas flows very well, is very well-structured, makes plenty of references, has a good beat, and is generally much better than Adam vs. Eve.

Edginess does not equal quality. Edginess for the sake of edginess is lazy and contributes nothing. Expecting Frederick Douglass not to get preachy about the issue he's most well-known for and calling it "SJW" is disingenous, intellectually lazy, and lends itself to discrediting Douglass's ideas. Thomas Jefferson's second verse is a natural response to Douglass's first verse, as the only criticisms he levees are about his use and promotion of slavery; expecting Jefferson not to talk about it is nothing short of absurd.

A lot of people back then, due to societal structure and formal religion, honestly believed that blacks were an lower class of human, meant to be slaves (as Jefferson Davis would say in the 1860's, "We recognize the negro as God and God's Book and God's Laws, in nature, tell us to recognize him. Our inferior, fitted expressly for servitude.")

Jefferson could have freed his slaves during his life, yes, but it would have meant his financial ruin, and there's no way he would have done it. And even then, he was in such bad straits monetarily that it was pretty much chance that the six he freed were freed after his death. The entire South was completely bound up in the slave/plantation economy, and the people in power would no more have freed the slaves and had them declared citizens than they could have flown to the moon.

Jefferson was opposed to slavery, believed it was morally wrong, but in the end, he didn't have the courage of his convictions, and it was simply easier to keep on as he always had.

The biggest issue with the second one is that they didn't let Jefferson attack. His first verse was mostly self-promotion and his second was completely defensive. Where Douglas basically tore into Jefferson's biggest character flaw for two verses.

This is mostly due to unevenly weighted foes. You have two real-life, incredibly important Americans who have have made major contributions to the country, but only one of them has an incredibly well-documented character flaw that can be relentlessly attacked.

I don't know about that. What I do know that Jefferson supported was the gradual emancipation of slaves, training them in skilled crafts as free men, and setting them up in another country because he believed keeping them around would cause too much conflict between the newly emancipated blacks and the formerly enslaving whites.

In 1824, Jefferson proposed a plan for the federal government to buy African American slave children, raise and train them, and then send them to colonies in Santo Domingo.

He was anti-slavery but also had a fuckton of debt, so never found himself in a position where he felt he could feasibly free his slaves. Not that it wasn't his fault; as I recall he spent a lot of money while in France and remodeling and expanding his estate.

Yeah I've always hated how all of those characters they played sound the exact same, like they're screaming at each other. It's like they found their preferred style from Hitler vs Vader and made everyone sound just like him.

I never actually thought the rap battles were chuckle worthy on most occasions, though I guess people do find them funny. The references and burns are usually the selling point for me, especially if the flow and beat - the most important aspects in rap - work. I find a good amount of them to be generic and basic. But I can credit them when they nail a character's personality, which I can applaud ERB for in general since most rap battle channels I find forced - like a white guy trying to sound "hard"(

Nicepeter and EpicLloyd usually play the characters for the most part, so I'd expect some of them to sound similar. The unique ones like Batman vs Sherlock Holmes and Bruce Lee vs Clint Eastwood stand out more since they're played by different people.
