I started playing this game years ago and then put it down midway through. Now I'm trying to pick it up and finish it, but I have no idea what the hell I'm doing any more.

I was at Snowdrift Station, walked into what I though was a dungeon but then it turned out to be an optional thing that just gave me an alchemy stone worth 2500 rupees.

I have the snake whip, the boomerang, bombs, and the leaf fan. Where do I go next?

If the answer is anything but "very far away from the game" then it's wrong.

I've spent a lot of my last year on the bus to and from work playing DS games I never got far into or hadn't played in a decade. This was one of them. It wasn't good.

If you've got the whip, you've at least gotten fairly far into the ocean dungeon in the southeast section of the map. Probably beaten it unless you're in the habit of leaving Zelda dungeons halfway finished in order to embark on ridiculous sidequests - in friggin Spirit Tracks, no less. In which case you probably either need to go back to the Spirit Tower and do a segment there to unlock the northeast section of the map; or, you've already done that and need to head to the northeast section of the map to do stuff that will eventually unlock the next dungeon.

Edit: Come to think of it, there's one part where you need to buy some special ice or something and haul it back to the northeast quadrant on your train for use on some lava or hot rocks or something in Goron Village? Considering where you were, you might have been in the middle of trying to do that.

This is essentially the reason I've come back to the game. I have an extremely long commute, and I decided what the hell, I'll finish this.

This is pretty helpful, thanks! The ice thing does sound familiar. I'll check the spirit tower and see if I can unlock more of the map.

Jesus, the last time I played this was in 2010 (according to the stamp book)...no wonder I couldn't remember what I was doing.

Also is Phantom Hourglass supposed to be better or worse than this?

Spirit Tracks is definitely the better game. It streamlines everything PH did poorly (the overworld map, the central dungeon) and maybe I had just gotten used to the weird perspective but it seemed better done in ST.

Phantom Hourglass is great, and Spirit Tracks takes everything PH did well and makes it worse

ST's overworld is my least-favorite in any game ever

(I l liked Temple of the Ocean King)

I beat both games within the last year and didn't like either. They share the issues of having bad DS 3D that can't handle Wind Waker's art style properly, a touch-based control scheme that allows for some unique puzzles but is pretty bad for normal combat, and just being generally dull outside of dungeons.

The consensus is that Spirit Tracks is at least slightly better than Phantom Hourglass, which I get the impression is mostly a kneejerk reaction to people not having to go through PH's Temple of the Ocean King like half a dozen times, which admittedly was annoying. It also has the better soundtrack (but "better soundtrack than Phantom Hourglass" is a damn low bar to clear) and for however little it's worth the story is probably better.

On the other hand, the overworld traversal is just awful and a total waste of time even compared to PH sailing. Also they make you do this dreadful flute minigame before each dungeon (and during the final boss fight!) that is controlled by microphone inputs and the game doesn't give you proper feedback on what you're doing wrong.

And it's pretty ludicrous that that ST has a metascore of 87 and PH has 90.

Those flute minigame things were truly awful.

Yeah, these are the two weakest Zeldas in the whole franchise, but I do think Spirit Tracks is slightly better than PH and I kind of enjoyed it. The train gimmick is certainly more boring than sailing, but the dungeons are better as is the soundtrack, which has some surprisingly standout tunes. Oh, and better bosses, which are actually some of the best parts of both games.

It's also neat that it's the latest game in its timeline and is essentially the most years ahead of any other Zelda (pre-Breath of the Wild).

Man, if there's even any debate over which one is better, I don't think I'm even gonna bother with PH.

Also I just did the flute minigame for the fire temple and I think the DS mic was picking up background noise, which made it nearly impossible.

You think this is bad?
When I played it it was during the eqrly days of the DS emulator and the mic didn't work well
So the only way for me to beat it was to use some workaround, the emulator let you use the audio output as a input so I had to figure out how to play a sound when needed and it took me hours each time

Also I don't understand why people pick off from the middle of the game insteading of starting again if they played it years ago

I mean. I left my file literally in the final dungeon. If I ever decide to beat it just to say I did, Im not going to want to replay the whole rest of the game. It is not good enough for that. Ill just find a guide to catch me up on what I was doing and be done with it.

I left Twilight Princess in the final dungeon too
But when I pick it up again I will play it from the beginning

I can understand not wanting to start from scratch again in a very very long game, but those are like 10-15 hours so whatever
