columbus allowed 35 more goals this year compared to last

dubinsky was worse and missed 20ish games
wennberg was worse and missed 20ish games
atkinson was worse and missed 20ish games
jack johnson was worse
foligno was worse

saad factored in on 21% of the team's goals last year. panarin factored in on 35% of CBJ's goals this year.

panarin makes them better. unfortunately that can't be 100% proven in a controlled environment, but it seems pretty obvious.

Luck, for starters. Which happens to account for a shit ton of what actually happens in a hockey game or season.

Other roster changes.

The talent pool in the league generally diluting because of the expansion draft.

The additional emphasis on some penalties being called over others this season.

How teams besides these two teams are doing this year compared to last year, especially within their divisions.

Players aging.

Players developing.

Injuries.

How well your goalies play.

Changes in tactics between seasons to account for the fact that neither team did well in the post-season last year.

The list goes on and on and on and isn't as simple as "This team is doing better this year so this player is worse than this other player." Things like that are determined by looking at shit either as basic as goals and assists or as complex as puck possession numbers and quality of competition.

And this guy said some great shit too. Not to mention CBJ rode a ridiculous win streak last season that inflated their totals well-beyond what any serious analysts thought was an accurate measure of their ability.

Cool, because I didn't say "Saad is better than Panarin." I said it's dumb to say "Panarin made them better" when they aren't, in fact, better. You listed a bunch of variables. Great. Lovely. You didn't explain how they affected CBJ specifically.

Not Dave at least made an attempt, although I could counter most of those things with "addition of new players other than Panarin" or "younger players who got better."

The factors he mentioned affect CBJ specifically because "better team" doesn't necessarily equate to "better record/position when the dust settles." They can be a better team skill-wise without it showing in the ending numbers.

And coincidentally, or unfortunately, they're the two Thursday games happening at the same time...

Though knowing our luck, we'll gets Washington/Columbus going to overtime again to really pad things out into the night.

Also if they go seven, the two game sevens will be happening at the same time (with likely no games the day before, unless they start the second round in the west the day before)

They really need to scrap replay in hockey. Colorado just got completely screwed in a game they were already struggling to keep up in by an obviously correct call being overturned.

He clearly pushed his skate forward and angled it to put it into the net.

The weirdest thing is they dont review certain things that are cut and dry like automatic puck over the glass penalties.

Replays really need to be for stuff thar is black and white only.
