before the mcu ironman was basically a nobody in the mainstream eye....but now? everyone knows that tony stark is ironman and that he's a member of the avengers

you could probably find loads of people wearing ironman t-shirts now more than ever than you previously could befoe the mcu and marvel has started thinking about ironman as their mascot more so than spider-man

but do you think that's really the case...has ironman gotten as popular as spidey or even more?

and yet Spider-Man's movie appearances just won't touch Iron-Man's MCU Work

the Andrew Garfield movies were a mess and the toby Maguire trilogy ended on probably one of the more humiliating comic book sequels of it's time(Spider Man 3)with the worst version of venom ever

Ironman had one good movie and then everything else associated with him has to do with the avengers group.
Spiderman has like 6 movies (only 2 were bad) and like 20 cartoons and now on top of that he's in the MCU. Did you not see how everyone lost their shit for him in civil war?

Ironman is like top 5 no matter how much they push him. He'll never eclipse: Hulk, Thor, Cap or Spiderman.

Lol, he's not even in the competition. Just because he has had a few movies that did well, doesn't change the fact that he's not one of the more popular marvel heroes.

He's not even in my top 20.

Spiderman is still my #1.

The thing you seem to be overlooking is that until recently Disney/Marvel has pushed Iron Man a lot harder than their more well known characters. Look what happened with the Fantastic Four. At one point they stopped the comic so people would be less exposed to them. They also have done similar with the X-Men. With that being said Spider-man is as popular as ever without the same push that Disney gave to Iron man.

Iron-Man is now spidey's mentor in the mcu and the person he looks up to as a hero

so cleary marvel wants iron man to be the head honcho figure

No, he's nowhere near as close. Even with all of Iron Man's added popularity in recent years (and keep in mind he was *always* something of a name, since he had a solo cartoon as early as the 90s -- even back when Stan Lee himself considered Iron Man a b-lister), it hasn't translated to that much success outside the MCU. Iron Man will *never* be the workhorse that Spidey is.

NightMareBunny posted...

A meaningless statistic when comparing him to Spider-Man. And, quite frankly, you don't even *see* many Iron Man shirts being sold in places.

ffs, NMB is a font of misinformation. Ultimate Spiderman lasted FOUR seasons. Otherwise it's so hypocritically NMB that he could make a claim like that *while* ignoring that the last Iron Man cartoon (Armored Adventures) literally DID only last 2 seasons and got virtually no merchandise. Oh, and unlike Spider-Man who immediately got ANOTHER cartoon to replace Ultimate, Iron Man hasn't had a new cartoon since Armored Adventures ended over 5 years ago.

ASM1 was better than the campy, goofy SM1 (with its weird metal Green Goblin) and SM2 (where Doc Ock spent far too much of the film talking to his tentacles -- seriously, do they only know how to demonstrate crazy in one way?)

You must have a *very* different vision of Spidey then, since the Raimi trilogy made the 60s and 70s Spidey run look serious by comparison. I still remember that one scene in SM2 where Peter just randomly tripped over a bike wheel. No reason. They just thought it would look funny. And then there were countless cringeworthy moments where actors really hammed up scenes. The *one* thing I'll give you, though, is that some of the action scenes in SM2 were pretty neat. However, the acting, story, etc, was a lot better in ASM1. Gwen Stacy in particular felt like a real person whereas MJ often just felt like a set piece.

Which isn't to say that I didn't enjoy SM1 & 2 -- and I still really like SM2 in particular -- I just don't feel that it's as good as ASM1 for any number of reasons.

Id say possibly more popular due to the MCU combined with three Spider-Man reboots in what, 15 years?

this is what I was thinking. RDJ made ironman great, but then the spider-man movies kind of did the opposite and sucked all the joy out of spiderman.

one problem has always been, IMO, that "spiderman" as a character is rarely or never even in the movies. it's *always* peter parker. try watching the first spiderman movie and count the lines that spiderman as a character has; there's barely anything. this is one reason why Deadpool is so good: they let the hero be the hero.

(this is a problem with the batman movies, too, but the nolan ones were good enough anyway that it didn't matter)

I disliked both ASM movies. There are aspects that I liked (like the action, his webshooters being mechanical instead of organic, and Spider-Man being snarky in-costume), but I hated almost everything else. I even liked the dreaded SM3 more than ASM 1 or 2.

ASM2 had the best live-action version of the suit so far, though.
