This, and Series C investment capital which is typically very gun-shy about adult material for a mix of legal, practical and "moral" reasons. They don't really care about the latter, but when you're talking about bankers whose money is actually coming from conservative Farmer Joe they can't grow interest from places that would cause too much upset.

As for the credit card companies, adult material is very high on fruad on both the supply and demand sides. So it requires what are called "high risk specialists" for payment processing. That gets expensive. So that's why it was a big deal that Patreon ever allowed adult material at all, because they aren't affiliated with these high risk payment processors.

Maybe someone needs to make a site specifically for them?

Also, they do need to wisen up though. If you're going to have a game that has incest in it, make a version where all the dialogue just isn't incest. Have that version be what you get from the site, then, when you actually finish the game, just change it back to the original version and have that be the completed game.

It's not that simple. You have to get a payment processing company on board that doesn't charge an arm-and-a-leg for adult material, or start your own bank from which to launch a payment service (a necessary step otherwise you're left forming partnerships with the existing banking system and you're right back where you started), and good luck with either of those.

Maybe, maybe if the entire adult entertainment industry as a whole banded together to create a credit union. But such an entity would need to be run separately from the adult entertainment industry to avoid conflicts of interests between competing adult material producers, which puts it at risk of market forces making it yet another high cost specialist.

In other words, ya' can't really win here.

Some people are doing that, and it's too early to tell how it's going to work in practice. I do know that people who've retooled existing games, or started new projects that were in line with Patreon's new rules have had pretty substantial drops in support even when they have plans to continue developing the previous content off-site. That's more of a marketing problem then a Patreon problem, so we'll see if someone figures something out. What I do know is that Patreon takes a dim view of using prohibited material to promote your Patreon, even if your Patreon is never used to promote prohibited material, so all it takes is some kill-joy to report it. But again, that's hypothetical, it's too new to see what's going to happen in practice.

Woah woah woah there, do you mean good porn games or good porn games? Because those have really different answers. There are few good porn games because quality is generally rare in anything, or as Sturgeon's Law puts it: 90% of everything is crap. It's more of an observation than a law but you get the idea.

If you're talking about good porn games, that's a pretty deep dive there - with a lot of issues surrounding it that I don't actually have the time to get into. The short version is that it's hard to sell a game in a marketplace that refuses to carry, promote, or (as mentioned above) process payments for games that feature hard core pornographic content. It gets more complicated when you consider fanservice games like Senran Kagura. It takes a very rare breed of horn-dog developer who also has the design skills AND resources to make a good game. Bayonetta and Team Ninja are pretty much the only times I've seen all of those elements in one place - at least off the top of my head. The conventional wisdom is that racy content is used to bolster interest in otherwise mediocre games, or is the focus of interest in and of itself.

Because making good games (especially when "good" relies so heavily on the visuals) takes a higher budget, and the relatively small market for porn games coupled with people's reluctance to pay for porn make such budgets pretty risky.

It matters a great deal if you're asking about me or Patreon.

Patreon has a legitimate business decision to make about removing it that has nothing to do with the content in question. It could be people drawing playful puppy art, and if that had an unusual degree of fraudulent transactions, the credit card companies would have issues with Patreon hosting playful puppy artists. There's certainly nothing wrong with playful puppy drawings, but if hosting it is a rocky business decision, then whether or not to host it is something to think about: you can stand for an absolutist position on free expression and risk throwing under the bus all of your other creators most of whom are not playful puppy artists, or you cut loose a small number of creators. That's the position Patreon is in.

The fact that I personally find it hard to give a fuck about the creators that did get cut loose is a totally different discussion that your response does not apply equally to at all. On a personal level, I don't care about shutting down the material they're making, but neither am I overly concerned about their difficulty in making a business of it. There's nothing about my principles of free expression that compels a business to handle material they've chosen not to, and there's nothing about my principles of free expression that all creative niches be economically viable. If the decision were mine, free and clear of business concerns, and left simply to my own judgment, I would tend to keep them on the platform because individual personal tastes shouldn't define what other people see.
