That perspective doesn't change anything, though. It doesn't make it any less bad. If anything, it makes it worse because the students were complaining that it wasn't visible enough. If your goal with that perspective was to make it seem less awful, I'm afraid it didn't work. If your goal was to just literally say "here's what one person thought" then mission accomplished I guess.

That's technically true. You just repeatedly alluded that something was fishy about the story on the first page because the flyer wasn't very clear. And then you followed it up with a student statement where the student is attempting to argue that it needed to be more prominent. The only thing worse than stating an opinion is implying one and then refusing to engage with anyone calling you out on it. It's the "I'm not touching you!" hover finger of discussion.

i want to know what the artists mean by "whiteness" before I cast judgement. i like to have all of the facts before i do so. you don't think it's a little sketchy that the artists own explanation / reasoning for this was omitted?

note that i defended the legitimacy of the mural and posted a source confirming that it's real.

thinking about this a bit more, i don't think the artist's definition of "whiteness" in this case matters. the language used is reactionary and counter to the intention the piece has of "starting a discussion". the very folks we need to have this discussion with are going to immediately shut down and reject the conversation when it sounds so aggressive aka the folks who we need to have that conversation with are not going to be receptive to a conversation that starts with such language.

Could have just as easily said "dismantle privilege," but they deliberately chose a word that was inflammatory, and they deserve the accusations of racism for it. And I have no doubts that some/many of the people who sponsored that actually are racist against whites and think this is a "cute" way to express that without being publicly ostracized.

That's fair, although I'll disagree that a discussion "needs" to happen in the first place. It implies that the person is alluding to a very real problem and using poor terminology to explain it. Given the tradition definition of "whiteness" that I've seen (see link below), I think it's more likely that what they're implying as a problem in reality isn't one at all.

yup. and it took me a while to figure this out, but if you want someone to be receptive to your message you need to use language that appeals to them. the moment you start using incendiary words you cause the person you want listening to you to shut down, basically silencing your own message. it's counter-productive.

Was listening to NPR the other day where some moron was talking about this girl in the 3rd grade who was the only black girl in her school and wound up hating the new black girl because she identified herself through "whiteness". You know, rather than feeling like a normal identity based off of something that made her stand out was compromised by someone else, an extremely normal feeling throughout your childhood.

I'm thinking "are you even a person? Do you go to bed and ever think that maybe you're overthinking things?"

This is a fundamentally simple lesson/principle that it seems some people never learned. Or, more likely, the people acting this way want a literal revolution and as such they don't care about trying to be reasonable, because when you want to burn it all down there's no need to be nice.

Italians became white. Now Asians and Indians are "white". If there's no way to define it, there's no way to combat it, because the issue isn't systemic. We know it isn't systemic because there are tons of examples of "nonwhite" groups breaking through it.
