Both are rushed to hospital where the father is pronounced dead and the son is rushed into emergency surgery.

The surgeon steps up but then backs up and says "someone else needs to take over, I can't perform on my son "

It's an old riddle made to make men aware of how progressive women were becoming. It was usually the men who believed women could be nothing but a housewife that never figured it out.

In All in the Family, there are multiple answers given including that one (I think), but the person who told the riddle said that was not the correct answer. There are multiple possibilities, but if there's only one answer, then everything else is incorrect. By design, the person would be forced into thinking of something else. After exhausting all other possibilities, the only answer left would be the surgeon to be a mother.

Again, it's to make someone realize they're sexist.

Why was the son inside a tree?

The dad discovered one day that he could summon angels by giving an offering of blood.

He was intrigued by it, so he did it a lot. Over time, he essentially trained them to respond by coming to consume the blood. His wife knew this was risky business, and tried to get him to stop, but he didn't want to stop. During a fight they had, he scraped his arm. The angels, sensing blood, came to devour it and unwittingly killed the dad.

The mom was stricken with grief and decided to try to summon the angels herself. She acquired quite a large quantity of goat blood and put it in a trough, not knowing if they would come. For a while, they didn't. Then eventually, a few showed up out of curiosity.

They weren't interested in the goat blood once they realized it wasn't what they were looking for, and began to leave, but the mom keptthem. From leaving.

"You took my husband, you bastards!" She cried out. The angels paid no mind. "You took him too soon. Well before his time!"

One of the angels stopped and turned to face her. "True," it said.

The angel spoke to her, revealing that this was a very sore subject in its society. Controversial, even. There was a party who thought they should try to right the wrong.

These creatures were not angels at all. They were beings from a higher dimension, who, by chance, looked like human depictions of angels. They were the guardians of the gates of death. And for the first time, theu had made a mistake.

The mother convinced the creature to attempt to right the wrong, whatever it took. The creature informed her that it would require one existing living human body for his spirit to inhabit. The mother responded that nothing mattered but her husband.

The creature said that they would attempt the procedure, but there were of course risks, so they would take their time.

A few hours later, it happened. Her brother-in-law, who was chosen because of his proximity to the mother, suddenly stopped mid-sentence. He stopped talking, stopped moving, stopped breathing. He stood, still as a statue, for several seconds before he began to change. It began at his waist. He slowly began to change, the change moving upward and downward simultaneously. And when he was done, he was the woman's husband.

"It was terrible," he told her. "I was dead. But, I heard you. I heard your heart crying out to me, but I couldn't answer. And that was the worst part."

A few days later, the newly-formed father was driving with his son when, purely by sick coincidence, he ran full-speed into the tree.

He died on impact and the mother rushed to the hospital to be present for her son's surgery.

But when her husband died, it broke something on the "angels'" patch job of our reality. It revealed a glitch in the programming of our universe that they had updated. It wasn't until the surgery was about to begin that the effects began to show.

The surgeon walked up to the patient. He was quite familiar with operating on total strangers, so this case should be no different. He grabbed his scalpel and approached the patient. Then he stopped. He stared at the kid for a second, and then said "someone else needs to take over, I can't perform on my son."

There was great confusion in the operating room. "What are you talking about?" The mother demanded. The surgeon turned to face her. He had her husband's face.

Before she could react, another doctor in the room transformed into her husband. Then a third. Slowly, an invisible field was expanding outward from the father who used to be the surgeon, turning everyone it touched into the father.
