I never had this feeling when the prequels came out. they felt like a genuine attempt to extend the story/universe.

but I don't get those same feelings with the new movies for some reason.

7 felt that way a lot because it reused a lot of ideas. I actually felt like the way they did it was clever though.

8 didn't really feel cash grab to me. It just felt like the writers were drunk.

I actually really liked The Force Awakens (fuck that its a remake of A New Hope! mentality, theres plenty to differentiate it from ANH- and please dont post that picture with Obi-Wan in it) but I thought Rogue One was just ok and The Last Jedi is good but nothing special. Certainly didnt wow me the way TFA did.

Im not excited for Solo, but with Abrams back aboard for Episode IX, Im optimistic. Im interested to see what kind of ideas they have going forward, but with a new movie coming out every year instead of every three years does make them feel a little less special.

Have no fear, they've got stories for years!

Like, Rey becomes a robot! Maybe Finn gets a cellphone. Has Poe ever owned a bear or....?

nerd rant incoming:

i felt the same way

i think the big one is that there is no broad scope or scale to the films, no sense of mystery or mythology, etc.

they're very safe plots, very sterile, but instead of building a universe or expanding the scope, creating things to imagine about etc the new star wars movies just regurgitate the original plot points and use assets from the original star wars movies to set up very simple plot points.

for all the shit that people give the prequel trilogy, and most of it is rightly deserved, they had this massive universe set up, and there was an ambitious scope. you had a real galaxy with planets like Naboo and Geonosis, actual wars like the Clone Wars and battle for Naboo, the Jedi/Sith Order is expanded on but still left mysterious, there's new concepts like pod racing thrown in there, etc. there's even a political subplot.

You never feel like you have a grasp on everything that's in the Star Wars universe because there's never a finite amount of things in that universe, and that's what makes the movies so fun. everyone who watches even the OT feels like Luke in A New Hope, where he's looking at the stars and all the possibility of the universe out there. i think that is what makes Star Wars such a good franchise, you can imagine so much more.

Meanwhile the new movies are just typical character action movies with a lot of Disney staples in it and all of the "Star Wars" aspects just feel like they shifted in a few assets to remind you what franchise this falls under. What makes a Star Wars movie a Star Wars movie? Is it because it has X-Wings and Lightsabers or is it because or the universe, the wars, the fusion of fantasy and sci-fi, etc?

100% agree. if you can look past the atrocious acting and cringey dialog, the ideas in the prequels (aside from fucking midichlorians) were mostly interesting, just poorly executed because Lucas is a terrible director.

bingo. the new movies have none of the magic. after one viewing of VII and VIII i had no desire to see them again. i dont think im excited for IX at all. and i have SW tattoos, that's how much i love the franchise.

yea it's sad. star wars is one of my favorite media franchises and i feel like disney has completely destroyed the magic.

this is exactly what i'm talking about, you have people making SW movies with no passion or ability to see the big picture of why SW captured the imagination of viewers for like 40+ years. it's just Star Wars assets cut and pasted into a vaguely sci-fi template

Episode 7 is the only Star Wars movie I would consider great. Other than that, I don't care about the films as a whole.

The main problem I have with the new trilogy is that they haven't given me much reason to care about anything. The conflict is just a recycled Galactic Civil War. The only characters I'm interested in are Rey and Kylo, and the plotline involving them is the only part of the story I find interesting.
